That's a great looking box carcajou and you got a great deal. Being a 50th anniversary box I believe it would have been made in 1969 or 1970. I have the same KC-532 box and I bought it used in 1969 so I'm guessing yours was close to the end of the run. Mine's just "plain old red". I've always like the "toilet seat" lid on that box. It's either up or down, no folding.

Awaiting restoration ...

If anyone in the Portland area wants a 50th Anniversary box for $100 PM me. It's far from perfect but there's no rust and the drawers slide very easily.

I had decided to make a tool cart out of this box, with the flat top it would be perfect for all my wiring related stuff. Now i'm reconsidering...... Anyone have a kc-556 bottom they would part with? Color does not matter as i'm having the top box repainted anyway. My top box was Made in Canada so perhaps Snap on used a different bottom box in the U.S.

I had the anniversary box painted and it turned out nice. Last week i found another KC-532 on Kijiji with twisted drawer slides for $50. I decided to change up to roller slides instead of friction and i did the 2 middle drawers. Always wanted to have a green box so........... Both these boxes are staying right where they are in my basement tinkering room. I figure after 40 plus years of service they deserve a easier life.

Those look great!!! I personally really like the gold one, but the green looks good as well.

What are the dimensions of those boxes? That top compartment looks really deep.

carcajou - Your boxes turned out great. I'm curious about your conversion to roller slides. What parts did you use and did you have to remove the spot welded parts from the original box and drawers?

Your stainless steel trim also looks great. Did you just remove it, hammer out the dents and polish it?

Thanks. You have it all figured out, now you just have to do yours. I had these slides on hand but any 1/2" thick slides 15 1/2" long should work. I'm sure there is a special bit to remove the spot welds on the box and drawer channels but i just used a dewalt 5/16 drill bit that has a pilot bit on it. I just drilled till it started in on the c channel and stopped. I found that if i lifted up the channels slightly with a pry bar the odd hidden spot weld would show itself. Just mark the centers of the c channels on the cabinets before you remove them. I used pop rivets to attach the slides to the drawers and self tapping screws to attach the slides to the cabinet.
Did the trim up just like you said, found a piece of scrap 1/2' plywood and laid the trim over it, then lightly hammered away. The only hiccup was getting the trim off. I took me a bit to figure out but a worn out hacksaw blade slid around and under the trim sure helps release it from the box.
I kept a few original parts if you need them also. What colour(s) are you planning for yours?

Missed the most important dimension... What is the depth front to back?

That is awesome that you converted from friction to ball slides. How much of an improvement do you think it is over the original?

Like putting EFI in a 1950's car.

That's interesting and sounds like a bit of work. I must admit I hadn't thought of converting mine. They work well except for one on the roller cabinet that has lost its stop tab at the rear (easy to correct). I have to be careful not to pull it out too far.

My top chest was originally a lighter shade of red ... a litle closer to orange. When I bought it in 1969 it had already been repainted. I will likely paint both the top and bottom cabinets traditional Snap-on red. The drawers of my top chest have not been touched. They are the original mat black. I'll either stick with that for both sets of drawers or go with a gloss black.

sorry 18" deep

Friction slides on large loaded drawers = 3 fingers
Roller slides on large loaded drawers = 1 finger
i don't mind friction slides on my kr 637/657b combo but they are mainly on the small drawers.
