So how do I mount this arbor press?

Ok, I bought a 3 ton Greenerd Arbor press from someone on Craigslist a month or so ago. nice unit, I've cleaned up the ram and handle, done some touch up painting and coated the bare metal parts in Amsoil Metal Protectant so they won't rust up.

Right now, the press is sitting on a roll-around table I have in the shop, its in the way, just there for want of somewhere else to put it.

Should I install it on one of the existing workbenches? Which I really don't want to do, would be in the way and won't be used often enough to justify it, or do I build some sort of stand, and if so, what?

What I'm considering is a stand of wood, much like a super heavy saw horse. The base of the press is 8 inches wide, so I figured either a couple or three 2x8's or 2x10's sandwiched together (or a 4 ft or so scrap of someones glue-lam beam) with either 4x4 or 6x6 legs and angle iron braces to stabilize the legs, will make a fine press stand, and allow room on the other end for a anvil (like I really need one!).

One restriction, I don't want to anchor it to the floor, no holes, no anchors.

Does this make sense, or does someone have a better idea of a stand that isn't too difficult to build.

Here is a deep throated version of a Greenerd on a metal stand (#3B)........

Here is a #3 like mine (only worse looking) on what appears to be an original type pedestal stand.

And a #3A on a stand...........

Just leave it in a stand. The only problem I see is when using the press you have to pull straight down on the handle , not pull toward you and down. If you do you pull the press toward you.

If you have the room and welding up a nice stand is not an issue, I would likely go that way. I am space challenged so I used bolts and big washers and nuts on the bottom side and mounted mine to a heavy duty bench.

Thats part of the reason I was thinking of the "sawhorse" with the press on one end and the anvil on the other.

My big 3 ton Dake came with a mount to attach it to the red iron frame in a building ( of course not the correct angle for my frames:-( anyway it looks like a good place to have one. The frame is not going any place and is already attached to the floor. If you would like I can take a picture of the mount and post it here. I had a picture of the whole thing mounted to a frame in the shop I purchased if from, but I lost the auction information and the picture went with it.... The other idea is to mount it to the side of your H frame press I have seen quite a few mounted that way.

If you are not going to attach it to the floor, maybe leaving it on a stand where you could move it against a wall or bench and attach it to an anchor point could be an option.?.? Not sure of your space limitations but attaching it to a point behind it would solve the pulling problems created by not being mounted to the floor.

Just a thought.

Thats an idea I like. I do have red iron frames. I could fab up some clamp plates so it could be removed/moved if I needed to. Yes, I'd like to see some pics if you could.

A sawhorse-type stand would likely provide good support for the press as you have described it...but may not be the best thing to put an anvil on.

The anvil should have solid support beneath it and not splayed legs.

How much of a project are you looking for on this stand? I had the same issue but on a smaller scale. Workbench height drill press and grinder needed to exist in the same SMALL area. So, I built a stand w/ a twisting top/Lazy Susan. I need the grinder, I spin the top. Need the press, spin it the other way. My spin is on the horizontal plane. If you really want a project, figure out a way to spin it, with another tool, on the vertical plane, ie. small rotisserie.

OR, and this is something I've been toying with for years. Create a tool crib and store ALL such tools in the crib on a standard platform, say 24" x 24". When you need it, get the tool from the crib and put it in a 24.25 x 24.25 supported "hole" in a work bench. Tool storage becomes a vertical question and "where do I put the crib?"
Just my 2¢.

Charles sorry it took me a while to post the pics I had a computer meltdown:wtf:

Anyway here they are I think the top plate where the press mounts is 1' plate. I'm not sure why they have the channel mounted to the side of it.
