I was in my Local Sears today. The feature display right next to the cash registers that had been Dewalt hand tools all through the holidays was changed out to --Craftsman made in the USA-- tools with a large sign and American flag. It was an assortment of sets of screwdrivers, pliers, hammers, and punches/chisels, which are unfortunately about the only USA tools they have left. This could signal a turnaround in Sears thinking on made in the USA but I doubt it. Time will tell.

The young man at the register, about 20 years old, had an interesting take on things when I mentioned to him that it was nice to see Sears pushing made in the USA tools. He said he really does not care where the tools come from and he hopes the display did not offend people from other countries. I left thinking that how sad it was that this young man has never been taught anything about civics, history, or national pride. Our education system is failing us bigtime.

Yep, our Education system really fails to "Educate". We've got kids that need help reading a map, and filling out an employment form.

I'm 20, and I do care where my tools are made. If that's the attitude of the sales man ill stick to tool trucks.

They're not all American made either so... ya. And I don't off brands, I mean the actual trucks name. Snap on has off shore production.. I'm sure the other three do too..

Kinda tired of sissified ***** waists like that. Just like an article I read recently about a high school banning kids from wearing t-shirts with the American flag on Cinco de Mayo er whatever.

Been browsing a lot more than posting, but this post has peaked my interest enough to post. I'm 20 years old as well. Now this is absolute ****. My generation is filled with a bunch of morons. They have no respect for this country and what it stands for. They're lazy. They rely on other people to get the job done. I'm afraid to see this country in 50 years.

Not to say that ever single person from my generation is like this. But a good majority of people are.

If I was the vise president :Help: I would fire him and replace him with a foreigner. His statement would become true and now it hurts him.

If you do not take pride in what you are doing then why do it?

I went to five different Sears looking for a socket set that I know was American made only a couple of months ago. Sears has gone full steam ahead with having their tools made in China and I really think they don't care one bit. More Chinese made tools means more profit in the coffer.

I won't say that I'm done with Sears, but I will say that I have almost everything that I need from them that is American made.

Welcome to modern America. You can say or do what ever you like as long as it doesn't offend anyone in any shape or form. Intended or not.

I starting to think they are beginning to fully understanding the implications of their choice and are regretting the move to china. I've seen numerous reports and even received myself a survey about craftsman tools. One question asking about where the item is made. Now with what sounds like a made in USA display, it sounds like they are trying to quickly turn the bus around. :dunno:

IDK, it sounds to me like their marketing dept decided to put up a counter display with USA made tools so that the sheep won't bother to look at the COO of the ones on the shelf. It isn't just the 20yo's that are clueless about these things. Every generation has their share of airheads, otherwise "As seen on TV" labels wouldn't sell as well.

If Sears was making a corporate decision to bring manufacturing back to the US, they would be hanging banners from the roofs of all their stores, buying 60 second commercials during the Super Bowl, and paying for full page ads in papers and magazines. Instead, they set up a POS (Point Of Sale) card at the counter where they take your money.

That about sums up this forum lol. But there will always be conflict because humans can never agree. The world would be boring if we did.

In my opinion that sign at sears was only a sales pitch. A pitch to make the lesser customer think all craftsman tools are made in the USA when in fact they are not. Those are the same people that don't vote and they think the gov has our best intrest in mind. Lol this country needs a revalotion before it gets destroyed or taken over. Or pres won't back up what he says and puts his head in place it don't belong.

Ironically if that Chinese food is fresh, wouldn't it be considered made in America? Or at least assembled in America? :lol_hitti

You can't blame the young tool salesman for recognizing reality. I'm 60 years old and nostalgic for the old USA too. But the reality is that American work ethics have gone to ****. I had to sub out a friend of mine's company, with all South of the Border employees, to finish a job that my all American crew couldn't get done. They knocked it out in no time. I've been thoroughly embarassed on more than one occassion with the all American crews that I've had and these work ethics are reflected in everything American we buy. Computerization and digital machinery is raising the quality of foreign tools pretty rapidly. EPA and other overzealous regulators don't help American tool companies produce quality either. Some mfgs are getting away from chrome because of EPA's war on metals.

I was in Sears today too. I fingered through just about everything I had time to look at for country of origin. I know a lot if guys here do that and I get curious at times too.

Aside from the tools you mentioned above, I also noticed the wire crimper/strippers, pipe wrenches, picks, and lots of the single RP wrenches. All the individual impact sockets/extensions, adaptors were USA, probably because nobody cleared the racks out yet.

The Sears workers probably shook their heads watching me shake my head at all the China drive tools.

No no, it's the price of the "premium" usa ratchets that are truly offensive. Insane!

We surely don't want people from other countries to be to be irritated when Americans try to buy domestic made products. That would be rude and obnoxious to these kind foreigners. And so unfair.:wtf:

It seems that we are more concerned with "offending" someone than anything else these days. America; the land of the offended.

I don't post much but I hate when people say this and I feel I must say something. Half the **** they teach you in school is not the full truth especially the history books or they conveniently leave things out.

It all starts at home. Lots of parents these days don't do squat for their kids. They rather be doing what interest them than prioritizing their kids. I have a 3 year old and 6 year old. If I left it up to the school to teach them then I would not be doing my job as a parent. The Wife and I sit down every single day with our 6 year old that is in first grade and do his homework. On weekends he does a couple of hours of home school curriculum that we purchased. My 2 year old, soon to be 3 this month sits there and colors and does flash cards while the oldest is doing his work. It's not entirely the teacher’s job to educate. You are dead wrong if you think this and this. I can hear the excusses rolling in now, "We don't have time with our work schedule". Bull! It dosent take alot of time to read to them or give them 30 minutes of your time to help them get started.

Along with this we have story time every night. My 6 year old started reading us bed time stories at 4 years of age and he has a 5th grade reading level. Not because he is some genius but because we take the time to do these things with him. Sure I rather be in my garage playing with my hot rod but I choose to have children and they come first no matter what, period. When a teacher ask us if we work with him at home and they tell us it reallly shows, thats better than firing up an engine I just built for the first time. There are too many students and as parents we need to provide the 1:1 time they need. When I do have time to go in the garage my boys are there with me wrenching on the hot rod so they get the mechanical skills they need.

I see alot of lack of discipline from parents as well. We are not our children's friends, we are their parents, we are educators and it reflects in them what kind of job we are doing. I see to manny parents trying to buddy up with their kids and letting them do what ever the hell they want and setting poor examples. We will be the down fall of this county if we don’t get our future generations in gear.

There is nothing wrong with being Patriotic, just don't be ignorant and arrogant . Don't just hide behind the val of Made In America and don't understand what it really means. Do we have any understanding of why our country is in the state it is in? Blame the internet? Blame the Business for selling/ordering the cheap products, Blame the Chinese for taking orders to make cheap products, Blame the people's greed for wanting the cheap products. Blame everyone except me please.

Why do we have to kiss everyones ***? This is America. Especially if you don't speak the language and have no desire to learn it. Go back where you came from. It's real simple. I'll never give in to "political correct"

Excellent Post. Bravo. I have an 18 mo old, and have spent the a good deal of time thinking about my sons education, and how my wife and I plan to supplement it.

I assume that everybody already knows that Ryobi (I can't spell) makes all Craftsman-branded power tools. They bought (paid way too much, apparently) the Craftsman brand back in the late eighties/early nineties.

I think Louis should be congratulated for posting what he did. Far too many "parents" not paying attention to their children these days.

Last time someone told me to go back to where I came from, I was in HS, and the kid was being treated by the nurse for a broken nose. My parents left an oppressive country to give their children a better life, when we show up here, my sister and I were welcomed by back-*** bigots.

This country isn't being ruined by the new generations, its being ruined by a subset of the older generation who just can't move on, and is hell bent on obstructing everything.

Its all good and well to be patriotic, but these guys are bordering jingoists.

We are now a globalized economy. The old days are over. Get used to it, adapt. Quit bitching.

Apparently his generation also thinks that the person working the register makes the decision on where to manufacture the tools.

Congratulations on the fine job you and the wife are doing with your children.

You and your wife are true true parents in every sense of the word.

This statement really nails your family values.

When a teacher ask us if we work with him at home and they tell us it reallly shows, thats better than firing up an engine I just built for the first time.

I taught in the public school system for almost 30 years, and I saw the differences between the good parents and the not so ____ ones.
The results were startling!

Keep up the great work; there are not enough parents like you and your wife in America today.

bravo sir. lots of redneck bigotry in this thread. sick and tired of all the "they took our jobs" bs. as for the comment you were responding to about learning the language i would remind the poster that america has no official language. as americans we frequently show our ignornance by being unwilling to learn about other cultures and speak their languages. it is not uncommon in europe and asia for people to know 2 or 3 languages, while here we learn one and then demand everyone else accomodate us.

I went into Sears last week to pick up those $40 bottom cabinets... The clerk saw me flipping through their inventory through various items and she asked me what I was doing. After telling her I was looking for USA tools, she excited told me "Well you are at the right place, Craftsman sells USA tools, I just built the display for them!"... I laughed. She was SO enthused to tell me that screwdrivers, pliers, and a few other misc. items were made "RIGHT HERE IN THE U.S.A.". Most of Sears employees just don't get it.

And for the record, she was in her mid 60's and was the store manager. And to defend the young generation (because the OP's sales clerk clearly makes a mockery of us), I'm 24 and know the difference between Chinese junk and quality made tools.

A country won't remain stable for long with 10 different languages and no borders. I didn't go to Mexico and expect them to learn English to accommodate me. I went knowing that it would be easier if I spoke Spanish.
