SO impact

We just had our Our Snap On impact we use at the race shop and keep in the class 1 car during a race serviced at Snap On. Came back in great shape and has a 90 day warrenty, but the batteries are bad. Last time we had 3 batteries rebuilt at Batteries Plus and 2 were good for about 1 1/2 to 2 years and the 3rd battery always had problems. They redid it for free 3 times and it failed each time almost out of the gate, I got tired of taking it back. Would you rebuild again or step up to new Batteries to the tune of about 180.00 each? Or is there another Battery that interchanges? I don't have the model number with me but I can post it this evening. Thanks, Jeff

Depends on what it is. I assume it's ni-cad, 1/2", so it's a CT4850, CT4850HO, or CT6850. Batteries are all over ebay for those. I have a new CTB4187 battery for sale on there myself for 90 bucks and sell good used ones for around $45 all the time, just sold two of them in the last week or so. Either CTB4185 or CTB4187 batteries work on those impacts, but the CTB4185 batteries are very old now, they stopped making them about 6 years ago. There's also rebuilding service on ebay for around 50 bucks too.

I would go with new batteries ..let me rephrase,, thats what I DID.

li So batt get you a warranty, they last me 2 years or so (just past the warranty) and I just consider it part of the cost of using tools.

Gun is a CT3850 and batteries are # CTB3185, which superseded CTB3187, 18 volt, 2.4AH, 2 batteries were dated 12/06, 1 was 08 which is the one that always failed

Oh OK, older 18 volt version. That explains the high new battery prices from Snap-On. Me, I'd get them rebuilt with quality cells, it's about a third the price of a new battery.
Of course, there's always the option of stepping up to a CT6850, the batteries are cheaper, much more plentiful, and the gun is stronger as well. Not sure how attached you are to the CT3850... kind of depends on that I guess. CT6850 kits can be had good used working for around $200.00 at times. I just bought one for a little less, if I remember it right.

I had my original Snap-On CT3850 impact battery rebuilt but would not do it again. It hisses on the charger. I have since bought the adaptor (not that much money) and use one of the newer Snap-On NiCad 18 volt batteries.

We are limited somewhat due to the bracket in the race car. I will look for another source for rebuilding the batteries. We may have to consider moving up and building a new battery holder for the race car.

I'd build a new mount and step up to the superior technology out now. Barring that, I'd look for a good used ct6850 and the lithium batteries to go with it if its really that big a deal.

Anything currently on the market is better than the CT3850. The CT3850 was a good gun in its day but its day has passed.

Stay far away from the CTB6185 batteries if you do. Only the CTB6187 is what you get. The CTB6185 were defective and they made the CTB6187 to correct that issue.
