Does anyone have a handle on where drill bits are manufactured these days?? I was looking at the MSC big book but they never say where they are made and sometimes you might see the word import.

List:

Cleveland
Hanson Irwin
Guhring
Triumph
Precision Twist
Chicago Latrobe
Vermont American
Dormer

These are the different ones I have been looking at. If someone can identify where they are made it would clear things up. Thanks!

Oh yeah any suggestions on some good ones in any configuration would be great because I am always drilling different metals every day from stainless to aluminum on all kinds of equipment. Thanks.

I have a set of left-handed Neiko brand bits that had no problems drilling out a broken 9/16 wheel stud.

Norseman Magnum Super Premium from Harry Epstein.

I researched drill bits for weeks and finally ended up getting these. Only had to use two in non demanding situations so far, but I got high hopes.

I will check them out. Thanks.

Never figured buying some reasonable quality bits could be this difficult. I suppose it will only get harder in the future.:wtf:

Irwin

29 piece Cobalt Set 1/16" to 1/2". Made in China.

I made the mistake of buying these and do regret it. The 13/32" bit already chipped while drilling 3/8" metal plate on a drill press at slow speed.

I'll try Dormer for the metric set next.

You didn't say anything in your post about a big set. Buy 3 small sets and make a big set.

Now I take it you have them. Have you put them to the durability test? I thought I saw a previous post that talked about them. They seemed limited on what they carried. I always used Vermont American stuff and they carried everything but now are made overseas. I figured there was some machine shop people on here that would be on top of this stuff with the major brands and what works.

Just went there and purchased some cobalts that were missing. Liked what I saw and will probably return for more. Thanks.

Here's another place that has come up in the past for where to buy the Norseman magnum's.

http://www.fairburyfastener.com/norseman.htm#Why Choose Magnum

And for what it's worth . . . my local pro tool store only sells Irwin and Norseman Magnum's. Irwin for those that want cheap and the Norseman for quality.

I believe Irwin Unibits are made in Maine, but their standard bits are not of US origin.
