I was looking in the catalog last night and saw a 1/4, 3/8 and a 1/2 ratchet that were black. Other then the model numbers there was nothing noting that it had any special purpose or not? Can anyone shed a little bit of light onto these black tools for me?

industrial finish
these tools have no chrome, the reason being that the tools will be used in and around machines that can be damaged by chipping chrome. Industrial finish lower the risk of FOD forign object damage

Ah, so the guts are the exact same, just the exterior is a different color. Nice. I think I like the way those look better for some reason. I have a set of husky pro ratchets that are black and really like the way they look.

They're also used by Ninja warriors working under the cover of darkness, where the errant glint of light reflecting from chrome could result in being hacked to death with a Samurai sword. And nobody wants that.

they are the special rusting model. The rusted handles are great for extra grip when working on greasy jobs.
Plus when your non snap-on tool friends are around they don't feel inferior since your tools look like ****.
The quality is still there, you just can't see it!

the huskys you are talkin about have some kind of coating on them, industrial finish is not a coating its more like a stain, think gun blue. its a matte finish, same as impact sockets
heres an industrial finish after about 42 years of use

I'm the original fan of the industrial (Parkerized) finish. The first 50% of my Snap-on was industrial. I've all the SAE combo and box wrenches, 1/2", 3/8" and 1/4" sockets, ratchets, extensions and speeder.

For whatever reason, the only metric industrial I've found used was a like-new set of combination wrenches off eBay. The rest of the metrics and all the misc stuff I've had to settle for the slick and common chrome finish.

The only downside I've ever found is it is harder to read the sizes on smaller industrial finish sockets.

thnx, jack vines

Another good thing about industrial finish is the ability to round off all those sharp edges. When you have it just the way you like it send it off and have it plated and you have a customized chrome ratchet.

amsoil MP metal protector spray does a good job or restoring the shine to some of the ind finish tools. I use it on our old truck at the house that is full of impact sockets. keep the rust away for sure...

Everybody should look into FlUID FILM.........non solvent (solvent evaporates)based rust inhibitor.

Shaun, You should find your area distributor and set yourself as a dealer as I'm doing here in Seattle.

As with BOESHIELD T-9, FLUID FILM is a high quality rust inhibitor........vesus the mediocre alternative of say WD-**

Yeah the guy here is a 1 armed man that will talk your ears off. I scored a free case of the stuff a few years ago by helping him change a flat tire. he was using a 1/2 long ratchet ( with only one arm) on his 3/4 ton van. So I broke out the cordles simpact and had it done in 4 minutes and had him back in the drivers seat. But then he started talking and talking and welly ou know TALKING. so he gave me acase of the mp and I have used that stuff on everything. works great. now he will not leave me alone.
