SO stainless benchtop question?

anyone running a stainless top on their SnapOn box, or more specifically, a KRL? My top has separated from the wood block its glued too again on the right side. Now when I put something heavy on the top it 'collapses' the top back down onto the wood underneath.. Doesn't move that much, maybe .25" at the worst spot, but its still quite annoying and unacceptable in my opinion. havent spoke with my dealer yet so not sure what he will say.. I already had the top swapped out once a few months ago for the same problem, in the same area, but the problem has resurfaced...

any ideas?

thats interesting... never heard of that happening.... will have to ask around to see if that has happened to any other dealer's customers

I bought a new krl (1022A) with a stainless top about 4 months ago, and my top has seperated from the core material too. I never really think about it when my dealer is here, but I have no problems, like collapsing, coming from it though. I've been planning on rebonding it myself anyway.

talked with my dealer today. he is ready to order me another top but I told him to hold off as I dont have the energy right now to pull the riser off etc..

He said it might be from humidity.. I do have a serious problem with alot of my non chrome tools rusting but not really much I can do other than try to prevent it as best I can. I cant see how humidity would cause the right side only to pull up on this top and my previous top.. Never an issue on the left side.

figured i'd update this thread..

spoke with my SO dealer the other morning and inquired about my replacement stainless top he told me he had ordered..Seems SO canceled his order because corporate received more complants about the wood separating from the stainless. they are working with the R&D department to try and figure it out...

sooo, if you are planning on ordering a stainless top you may want to make sure the dealer is aware of the problems in case you get a bad one.

good to hear I guess, i was starting to think it was just me..

not a big deal, moreso an annoyance. and for the money spent, I definitely dont want it happening.

I just picked up a used SS top last Monday. I was somewhat careful handling it because I read this thread back in Oct.

Question for you guys with SS tops...

Is it normal for there to be a 1/4" between the lip of the top of the box and the bottom of the SS top? I thought it would be a little tighter on the gap for a more seamless appearance.

The two pieces are not even over the lock either...

Maybe I expect too much from something that was originally $700 although, function before form on this one for sure.

I don't know the answer to your question (unless the KRL-series boxes have a deeper recess on top than the KRA boxes).

What I don't understand is, if you're going to protect the top of your toolbox with a stainless top and then protect the top of that with a rubber mat, why not just sell the stainless top and protect the top of your toolbox with a rubber mat?

I didn't have anywhere to throw the mat at the time so I just threw it on top.

the rubber mat could be nice on there if you are working on something and you don't want it every piece of metal you drop on it to be super loud.

I put a mat on top of my SS top to cut down on the scratching I get from other techs putting **** on top of my box. In addition, dropping a wrench on the top with no mat makes a hell of a sound lol

I was a bit mad about this, but after sanding a little off the wood underneath it closed up the gap real nice. (Not sure if that voids the warranty, hope not..) The other Snap On boxes in the shop that came with the SS tops already installed from the factory didn't have that gap.

How thick is the stainless top? (That is, the actual stainless -- not the whole thing -- incl. the wood core).
