I was watching a video of tech at an MX race team and near the end he shows off his SO tool box. The question was "how much have you spent on tools?" He said about $10,000....for a small collection of tools. So my question to you guys is, how much are those guys with the REALLY big SO boxes, stuffed with SO tools spending? I know they are for work, so I am not knocking on anybody on there investment. Just curious.

look at the link in my signature block.. everything you see there, including the box cost me just south of $20,000... taking into account that I got anywhere from 10-20% off most items..

I just did an inventory last year ( have spent a few thousand more since) and I was at just shy of $48k. That is retail, replacement cost though. When you figure that a large SO bottom box costs $10k plus it doesn't take much.:)

I have $5,000 in a carry around box and still need 1/2 and 1/4 inch sockets, ratchets and extensions just to make a viable set that I don't have to borrow from other sets to do some basic work, not including getting inside an engine or transmission. Could use some short wrenches, too.

I talked to a mechanic that works on airport vehicles (not planes or jets, just ground vehicles owned by the airport), and I think he said he personally had $40-50,000 worth of tools in a really nice Snap-on box that, as I remember, was close to six feet tall and three and a half feet wide. I didn't ask, but I expect the airport probably supplied some of the more specialized tools because of the wide variety of vehicles he and his co-workers had to work on.

I've got $165 invested in my Snap On collection. Of course, my collection consists of 1 ratchet, 4 wrenches and a set of wire crimpers. :D

I think I'm at $85..... Two ratchets and a pitman arm puller, all used from eBay. (I hope to get more eventually).

I'm a DIYer that just happens to appreciate nice tools, my collection is almost all SO. I don't have a big SO masters roll cab, just their large cart. But, if I had to add it all up, Its in the $5-7K range, and I would say that I have all the basics covered, I can see how the professional guys would have 20-30K worth no problem.

Considering the vast majority of SO purchasers/users/target market are professional technicians the answer is -0- The tools are a cost of business expense in the pursuit of earnings. The tools pay for themselves many times over during a career in the trades. They are also elegible for tax write off purposes. Additionally with proper care (not left outdoors to rust, beaten with hammers etc) the residual value is retained and those with time (retired or left the trade) often ebay or sell older SO tools for multiples of the initial purchase price.

Md11 there is not a thing you own middle shelf. Vet nice tool collection.

I have made the hardest effort to avoid anything that's not US, EU or Japan made.. some Taiwan slipped in and at last count there are two China made small value items in there..

@sickytwisted I don't know why, but for some reason there are some people's browsers that don't like my Apple .me website... try a different browser or try to reset your browser cache and look again..

Also, if you have a low bandwidth internet, that sometimes won't work.
