So what in the heck are these sockets?

They're 1/4" drive, and have no markings on the outside. They have a wire of sorts that seems to be inserted into a groove in opposing sides of the business end that makes a "U" within the body of the socket.

Any guesses?

I have seen similar contraptions in bit holders, so i would guess that. Does a 1/4" bit fit?

Yea those are bit holders. You normally get one or two of them in a set of bits.
