I found this item at a pawn shop during one of my many socket bin searches. Is it a specialty socket or something else all together? Both ends are the same. It's stamped with what looks like a serial no. (can't make it all out) and "USA" "35." About 1-1/2" in length. Some interesting grooves all around the surface.

It kind of looks like the outer ring of a shaft coupling. It looks like there is a groove for a snap ring, which would hold it in place, on the inside.

I have to agree it looks like some kind of coupling. I used to work at a hydraulics lab and we had a cabinet full of sleeves that looks just like that for driving hydraulic pumps when we would test them.

It almost looks like it would slide right on the output shaft on a transmission. Would it have something to do with clutch adjustment?

Maybe it's a gauge for checking splined shafts for twists or other damage.

I once grenaded a Powerglide behind a 396 by accidentally shifting into reverse instead of second with the throttle firewalled.

Upon disassembly, I could not remove the clutch hubs from the shaft because the splines were so twisted.

Is it big enough to be an extension of some sort on the splined 1" impact guns? I used to work in a diesel tractor body shop and I have a vague recollection of a extension like that; I could be wrong but looks familiar!

See the splines? Looks similar?
I say take it down to a truck stop and ask in the service dept. if they recognize it and I bet they could pick that one out!

It looks like the splines are "stepped". Are they machined that way, or is it from wear?

They look and feel machined but I could be wrong. My mechanic skills are pretty base so I can't be of too much service here but I appreciate the help.

I got it for next to nothing so if anything it's an interesting curio and it's heavy enough to knock someone out or to be used as a paper weight. Win/Win. ;)

I'm fairly sure its a "solid spline shaft coupler" used to join two shafts, although I would have expected it to be longer than 1 1/2".:headscrat

Spline drive sockets have 14 splines and yours has only 11, so I would not think this is its purpose.

Bingo,
That's what I was thinking. I designed hydraulic test stands for a while and we had tons of couplings like that made. Incedently, they were able to charge stupid money for the adapters I would have liked to have had a piece of that. Anyway, without the machinery that it mates to I would say it is pretty much usless.
