My dad says my grandfather had it on his work bench for years and now we don't know what it is. I figured this would be the place to find out.

No, no, no! Its a muffler bearing. Looks like an antique one at that. Maybe from an old Tree Jack or even a Skyhook. Be carful not to take off the end caps or all the blinker fluid will excape.

Yup, U-joint. They can be easy to replace or a PITA to replace (if you're on the side of the road - BTDT). Your grandfather probably kept it on his bench as a trophy to commemorate his victory.

This is very very basic.
What do you do for a living.
Tell us about what you do in your garage.

I must have missed the Great Test of Knowledge to gain entry to this forum. Sorry next time I'll ask another forum if something is too basic to ask here.

This is very very basic for anyone who's worked on older cars or current larger vehicles. Anyone who's only worked on cars made in the last 25 years, though, could very reasonably have never seen one.

Sanny81, Please be assured there is no test for participating in this forum! Everyone of all levels and interests is welcome! Duckface is a good guy, but sometimes he can come across a little gruff ... mostly his style of writing, I think. Don't be too quick to take offense at comments others make as you'll find this a very friendly forum and not full of a--holes like I've found in other forums.

Or one of a pair from the front axel on an old 4x4 truck

Same thing. A u joint is a u joint. Same basic design for all of them.

It was probably an extra from a job years ago. Smart mechanics always order an extra, as it is very easy to break a roller bearing inside the joint cap when hammering them together. I hate doing u joints. It is always a pain in the *** job. I've never had an easy one, they all fight me. I've had to heat yoke flanges cherry to get u joints out before. Hate that work.

You guys beat me to it. I was going to say a component of a Hardy-Spicer joint.

Ok ok, I had no idea a universal joint has any other name.

I am, alternately, and daily, and almost exactly equally, accused of either using too many words or too few words.
This was just a case of too few words in my first post.

Too few leaves room for interpretation and makes the reader form conclusions, which two of you did, based on yourselves.
Too many locks the response to yes or no and leaves little room for others to chime in. Had I just blurted out my intent and links you would have no other things to write about and the guys who came unneedingly to your defense would be down by one post count.
What you do is important to know when sending you to links.
What you do in your garage is important to know so I can be specific with my links.
It is indeed a very very basic item to know of almost universally (ha!) for any knowledge or life base.
If you were a nurse who lead a narrow childhood, I would have adjusted according guy with my links.
As it is I do not know of how to approach a mechanical equipment maintainer who missed u joints somewhere along the line. So.. No links.

I gave you the benefit of the doubt once but I guess I should have just stuck with my initial opinion based on your first post.
