Socket Labels?

Has anyone tried any of these socket labels on Ebay? If you have them, any opinions?

I won't scoff, my eyesight isn't improving either. I think you ought to buy a set then report back on your findings!

For $4.50 why not try it? It's not like you're out much. If they don't work, stick it on the cat's paws for $4.50 of entertainment. I would *guess* that with todays adhesives and such, they will stick fine with good prep, and it will come down to hitting and rubbing the sticker during use. Hell, if they work, buy 3-4 sets and if you screw up a label, slap another one on.

Edit: I will say I think good organization is better. I would think of using Lisle magnetic trays and writing the sizes ont he tray with marker. When you take the socket off the ratchet, it goes directly back into the tray. I could pick out any socket out of my box at work blindfolded, hands tied, using my toes.

What the heck, I'll 'take one for the team'. I ordered a set.
I'll take some pictures when they get here.

I don't need them but when I showed the auction to my wife she wanted them. She has to pull the socket off the rail, hold it next to her eyes, then move on to the next one when she needs a socket.
So if they work she will appreciate them.
If not, well it's not a lot of money.

I used one of the label makers to make plastic labels for mine. I first cleaned all of them off with brake cleaner so that they would stick on. The only ones that didn't want to stay on were the very small ones, because of the sharp curvature of the tape. It did help a lot. If these are paper, maybe you would want to spray them with lacquer or shellac so it would be easier to keep them clean.

I think for $4.50 I might be inclined to pay you to do that so I can watch. Now THAT is entertainment !

I ordered up a set for myself. Cleaning the sockets with brake cleaner before applying the decals sounds like a good idea. I do have the Lisle magnetic socket trays and like them a lot. I'll probably like them even more once I write the sizes on the socket tray with a marker; good idea, Nissan Crawler!

Don't waste your money, I received them as an x-mas gift. I spent over 4 hours cleaning every socket then applied them. 2 hours later they started to pop off . The red labels are easy to read but the green ones are difficult to make out with the shine/glare. and they are not that durable 2-3 rolls or scuffs on a concrete floor and they are finished.

All mine are off now and I found a fine line yellow paint pen and killed a few more hours filling in the #'s. This seems to be much better, man it ***** when your vision starts to go south.

If they start to peel, buy a roll of the clear shipping tape. Get it at a place like Staples, Office Max, etc, NOT the Big Lots type. On some of the tools that get handled daily where I work, they put a toolnumber on a punch for instance with a self sticky label then wrap it with clear shipping tape. It stands up to daily handling for a couple of years. It won't stand up to harsh chemicals, but for daily or occasional use and wiping down would be fine. And the shipping tape is crystal clear and tough and thin. So it would hold down one of those labels just fine.

My friend has the red ebay labels. They really are great, while they're on. I'm not convinced of the durability of them. Putting some clear packing tape on them sounds like a good idea. I like those northern tool labels as well, since it's easier to see them from any direction.

These labels will only last until they get oily or greasy... then they are as good as done. No more adhesive.

Maybe just use a paint pen? Or an engraver with some yellow paint - for a more permanent solution

Great when the socket is new/big. Once you get some grease in there you wont be able to see it and if the socket is too small you wont see it either.

My HF impact sockets are only laser etched, no stamp. The numbers are only outlined rather than totally etched. A little dirt and you can't read them. Other than the marking, they've stood up fine. I was looking at these glue on's. It says chrome foil. What the heck does that mean? They are not sheets of chromium. Foil is not usually plated. My guess is that it is metalized mylar film. Their add shows three layers, a protective plastic layer,the layer with the number, the "chrome foil" layer and the adhesive. If anybody has these does it look like there is a metal foil layer of aluminum or stainless or are they just plastic? If that is the case I might as well try P Touch labels with the high strength adhesive backing. Good adhesive would not be the problem but a label that wouldn't rip up after a few drops to the garage floor.

I was thinking the same thing about the foil and if they would last. I ordered 4 sets for my guys at the shop. I have seen them on ebay but ordered them from the manufacturer at www.steellabels.com. We cheated and threw our sockets in the parts washer over night lol, then wiped them down and applied the labels. I really think the "foil" makes the label bond with the socket because I have not had one issue with the labels. They look good and make grabbing a socket way faster. The only question I have is should I charge less now that we get the job done faster??
@ gotmud13613, make sure you let the labels cure, the adhesive will harden.

It might be "spin'" to a certain point but I tell you they work and look great. I did try "stamped" sockets and did have a cheap set of "laser etched" and found that the stamped easily got dirt and grim in the stamped part and literally had the laser etched wear off my sockets from harbor freight. We have em installed at the Lube Express in Oregon and am very happy. Also with they are guaranteed with a no questions policy. I figure that if they work in our high volume shop with oil and gas they will work anywhere. Maybe Ill post pics later.
