I am looking for some socket organizers that I can put in the tool box in my truck. Looking for some that aren't real large in size but keep the sockets from moving around. Also want separate ones for 1/4" 3/8" and 1/2" drives.

get some socket rails. But bouncing around in a truck the sockets might come off the rails. I'd make something to do what I needed it to do; some kind of enclosure...like a tool box for the sockets. Old socket sets used to come in a metal box, something like that'd be perfect

SK tools has socket trays, not sure if you'd need to rivet a handle top to hold them in place. That could be neat, not sure how to go about getting just the trays.

An alternative could be to use socket rails like from HF and cut them to size and put that in a cardboard box(anything that'll hold them, really)

Just ideas.

I don't recall where I bought them, but I have a 155 piece Craftsman set I keep in my truck, I put the sockets on plastic rails where each socket rides on a square drive with a spring loaded detent ball, much like the ratchet itself. Probably 100k miles in a bouncy 1 ton truck toolbox and they haven't come loose, unlike those spring steel rails that always seem to come loose.

What I have looks identical to what HF offers, though I know mine didn't come from there, as I bought them several years before I had ever even went to a HF.

I put them into a 3 drawer portable tool box, along with any other mechanical/electrical tools I might need for typical roadside emergencies/fixes, and then that inside my truck box.

I do agree with the idea above, the old school metal socket boxes are great if you can find them.

i would like to find the plastic rails that hold a full set. Sears has them, but they hold like 6-9 sockets and you have to buy the extra square holder pieces and they are not cheap. I wont use the cheapy spring steel ones anymore, just don't like them.

You got a lot of options. I'd just use "pull off" rails. That's typically what I carry if I need to roll with tools. Magnetic of course would also be good. Decently made ones hold sockets pretty much through an earthquake; the spring ones aren't so great but you can get them much cheaper. I don't think trays would be okay unless you mounted them or had them in a box within your box.

I won't give any recommendations though, it's gonna depend on what you want to pay. Lots of options. I have a couple of craftsman rails that are great but they're old(er) and other random rails that are only okay quality wise. I have the harbor freight spring ones and they ain't great with 1/2 because of the weight of the sockets, the larger sized sockets in my box come off so I have to store it upright.

i use a combination of socket holding devices in my service truck.

metal trays that most of my sockets originally came in
MTS magnetic holders
SO metal rails
lisle flat holder
the lisle is probably my least favorite, but it lays flat in a repurposed blow molded box with a smaller CM blow molded box. i keep all my 1/4" dr tools in it.

i've found individual empty socket trays at the flea mkt in the past, as well as plastic CM blow molded boxes. socket trays usually a $1 or 2, blow molded boxes up to $5 or so

my trick was to cram as much stuff into the top of the box so nothing can move :rocker:

not much of a close up pic, but the only one i have
this is only 3/8" & 1/2" dr sockets

One of these from lowes would be good. All your different drives on one tray. Nothing to move all around and everything right there.
