If you have a 1/2 inch set already, I'd just get a 1/4 inch set to go with. There's no realistic case where you'd need a 3/8 set if you already have a full 1/2 and 1/4 socket set.
3/8 by itself covers most automotive needs but the other two combined also cover it all and a bit more.

I think the Wera sets in the textile "case" are ideal to throw in the car. Nothing will rattle or get scratched, and they even have velcro on the rear.

^ valid point.

When I first bought all my tools, I got 1/4" and 3/8" drive only. I didn't get any 1/2" drive stuff until about 15 years ago.
I wonder now why I didn't just go with 1/4" and 1/2" in the first place.

on the other hand:

There is no end to the number of different accessory widgets you can snap onto a 3/8" drive ratchet or extension, many of which are simply not available in either 1/4" or 1/2" drive. (e.g., hex drive bits)

This Tekton set is WAY cool. I gave one of these to a buddy who works on my vehicles. He LOVES it.
the pieces snap snugly into their little holes and don't rattle around while he's driving.
(Of course, he's about half deaf like me, so take that in mind.)
On both sets I shopped ebay listings until I found a deal. There are gazillions of these out in the market place:

(* The little miniature ratchet was an add-on. The SRH11106 was also an add-on - a 90-tooth *)

I just purchased a Dewalt 192 piece set, 1/4, 3/8/ & 1/2. With out a bunch of filler bits. Depot and Lowes both run sales right now.

I purchased this set back in 2017 (the 204 piece) and it has not let me down yet the few times I needed it. My only gripe with it is that the ratchets are HEAVY. Seriously, if you threw the 1/2 ratchet at an Abram's tank, I'm pretty sure it would dent it pretty good.

A tenant moved across the country in his Jeep to go to a new job on the East coast, he left behind one of those inexpensive tool sets with both SAE and Metric sizes in a blow molded case; that set found a new home behind the seat in my van.
