I would like some opinions on the best socket set for the money. Not really looking at truck brands due to price. I like the complete craftsman set, but not real happy with sears lately and it is pricey for a set I feel may not have a warranty. I want shallow and deep sockets in 1/4, 3/8, and 1/2 inch drive. I found a nice Williams 3/8 set on Amazon for a decent price, but couldn't find a comprehensive set.

For impact sockets, the Pittsburgh Pro chrome moly sockets are good at Harbor Frieght. Make sure they say chrome moly and are from Taiwan.

If I am reading your post correctly, you do not want truck tools (prices) you do not care for the craftsman warranty, and the Williams set was not complete., am I good so far?

Have you ever considered the Gearwrench socket sets?

+1 for gw set.
Only have 12pts of gw at work, and sunex/snappy impacts. I like my gw's, and the trucks warranty them if needed, im set lol.

But the gw are good quality. And work greate.

There are many, many choices out there. SK,Proto ,Williams,Wright just to name a few.
The only caveat to Williams is they have two lines one is American made(a la Snap On) and the other is Taiwan(a la Blue-Point) the import sets start with a 3 prefix and I believe the USA stuff starts with a letter code.
here is one example:

I'd say GW. I've had my set for a year at work with no problems. I'd also consider SK.

Imported? I'd go with Gearwrench or Pittsburgh Pro (harbor freight, make sure to get the PRO not the regular sockets).

USA Made? SK (first choice) or Williams or Proto.

SK 91848, 94549, and 4147. Nice comprehensive sets. You could go to the 91860 for 1/4 drive if you really wanted to. I'd like to see the 1/2 drive #4147 set have some bigger deep sockets, but it's still a nice set for the price.

I'm partial to s&k, having been raised on craftsman USA.

I recently assembled gearwrench set and armstrong set in metric. I was able to get both at 90 percent off retail. It took an hour standing and sorting a big bin full of individual sockets. I like them so much I'll be completing the sets by getting deeps, etc.

Should just piece together sets from various stuff honestly. 1/4 you don't really need though it depends on what you're doing.

kobalt taiwan, pittsburgh pro taiwan, and duralast taiwan are good places to start (because it's all very similar).

If you're not doing anything crazy might go for a lower quality craftsman or husky set. Husky sets are pretty cheap, not the greatest but around the same quality as the craftsman china sets but cheaper. If you're doing simple stuff it's probably good enough.

Lower priced high end stuff people recommend wright but I don't have any experience with that brand. If you can find old stock usa made craftsman it was pretty good, there are also old stock kobalt usa you can get pretty cheap but not in that big a set (usually smaller sets).

What the what?! Virtually everything on the interior of a car is handled with 1/4". A lot of electronic engine components, too.

...and for the OP, this is a pretty comprehensive 1/4" set. Advance has some 40% off codes right now, too. Just make sure to get a Taiwan-made set rather than a China-made one when you pick it up.

Gearwrench chrome sockets. 17mm and 14mm that I've had for a year. 17mm shallow I use almost every day.

SK is the best value you will find for sockets. If only they made a fine tooth, pear head ratchet...
