I dont really NEED more sockets but I would like a complete set. What are some good options? I was thinking the TEKTON 1/4-Inch and 3/8-Inch Drive Socket Set, Inch/Metric, 6-Point, 3/16-Inch - 3/4-Inch, 5 mm - 19 mm, 45-Piece | 13501

I think this would cover most uses and I like the Tekton warrenty

Get the Duralast Professional mechanic kit in 3/8, it does hold up well for weekend warriors, and you walk into Any Autozone for warranty honoring.

If you want a great set, S&K superkrome... way more money, but members here mail in busted tools all the time and get back new all the time

Dang no kidding on the superkrome! Iv done the same with the few tekton tools I have and cant complain! I did learn the hard way that most all automotive is metric, could have saved a lot of money not buying both metric and standard wrenches n sockets

I do not know about tekton tools but I have been reading a few nice tings about them.

SK, Duralast all good in my book.

Just a thought mind you and a tad bit more expensive but not by too much, have you ever thought about Carlyle tools by Napa? Very well made and from my experience just about every small town in America has a Napa store so warranty is not a problem should they fail; just walk in and out asap.

Gearwrench is another good name to look out for; and speaking of the devil Napa will replace them if they should ever fail.

I have heard good about gearwrench! Didnt know that NAPA would replace them, hmmmm I see that craftsman is coming to Lowes so I may look into that too! I am just at wits end with the no name sockets that literally fall off the ratchet and get swallowed by the engine bay or roll across the flood to never be seen again

you did not list your location, but if you check your local cl from time to time you can pick up craftsman sockets on the cheap.; only problem is...finding sae will be super easy, finding metric will be much harder in nature.

Thats why I mentioned duralast; if you lose a socket, you dont have to beat yourself up too much. And, since youre filling up a cart, MAGNET SOCKET TRAYS AND TOOL HOLDERS AND PLATES. Those are triple their worth in gold. those let you use about any flat surface on the cart and stops bolts from getting lost.

I only stated the best low price people and the top of the line you can purchase without the truck guy to stop by every week. The other tool companies are good too, and its up to you which you wanna spend for. Duralast = Easy start up for a new tech.

Another cheap source is Home Depot for Husky and Lowes for Kobalt, but after reading a few horror stories on the GJ (the sky is falling) I gather that replacements are rather hard from store to store ???:dunno:

I have had good luck with my kobalt stuff from lowes. I have noticed they like to discontinue stuff regularly which puts you in a bind for a replacement. I am pretty sure at this point anything will be an upgrade to the random 1/4 and 3/8 I have that have no name (cheap HF set) I mean like the dirt cheap set

The HF... is what it is. Make sure it has “PRO” somewhere on the packaging. Those are average by everyone elses standards.

The old Craftsman sockets sets are pretty durable, the ratchets that are included are a let down. And hard to warranty when you finally break one.... cause you getting non usa replacements.

FWIW, My daily tool set i use is a “challenger proto set” from way back in the day... man its like golden age tools worth looking into... retired the ratchets, using a matco flex head...

No idea why anyone worries about warranty on a socket, you likely loose it or beat it to submission before ever use a warranty and they so cheap simply not a concern for warranty cover.
I would get gearwrench sockets in rail sets as nice design with professional features such as large double stamped sizes, knurl ring, long stepped shouldering, full depth broaching .
Ratchets are more important, napa carlyle are good pro usable and easy warranty and pretty cheap for quality grade, GW 84T are pretty good when bought in 2 or 3pc sets for likes of 30 bucks and lubed after a short break in period .

Yeah I quickly learned about their "pro" line and I can't knock the HF too bad, some tools you seriously have to try to break them. I have noticed a trend in the importance of quality ratchets. I may do the duralast or just splurge and get the tekton ones

Yeah like I was saying some tools you defiantly have to try to break it! I was looking into the gear wrench stuff. I am set with my impacts just would like a good set for the non impact

While Viru5879 didnt specify the budget, You’re right about those features. I’ve not busted a GW anything yet to have to make a claim, but members on here say its a mission to warranty GW.

Gearwrench sets are currently 50 percent off at Advance Auto Parts. Hot deals section of forums. I purchased standard and deep 3/8 drive sets for total of 28 dollars. I think the 1/4 drive metric total about 20. Can reduce price with speed perks. Overall they seem decent but haven't put them through much, have too many sockets.

I was pleasantly surprised by Duralast but they changed manufacturers at the very end of the year. FWIW more Chinese instead of Taiwan tools. Still can find old stock tools on Autozone shelves. The old stock ratchet I bought in March is solid, they only had 1 left. Couldn't find any of the old stock socket sets though (believe ID'ed by blue and red strips to differentiate metric and SAE).

Really like Tekton. Own their combo wrench set and love it. If it weren't for the deal would have taken Tektons over Gearwrench. Apparently Tekton's warranty is also easier to deal with than Gearwrench.

I will look into AAP and see what they have available. As far as budget I wouldn't mind $100+/- for a complete 1/4 and 3/8 set metric and standard. As for the tekton warranty you literally snap a picture and send it with a claim

I normally recommend Craftsman for DIY and Snap On for professional use.

But who knows how long Sears will be around (to easily warranty their Craftsman line)?

I bought the same sets, 28 dollars for them felt like a steal. Complete sets, on nice rails, made in Taiwan. They're excellent sockets, I've used their semi deeps professionally for a year now without issue, they're my first grab sockets at home and at work. That said my new set had a large paint blob on one of the sockets right where the nut or bolt would hit so I had to sand that down, but grabs the fasteners great now :D

Warranty last thing I consider on a socket, top of my list is design features and socket I enjoy using and range in all sizes I want and available singles .
For price of a socket I simply not interested in warranty as not broken enough in 3 decades of daily use to worry,
Extra good grade ratchet and easy/quick warranty useful though and same for wrenches .

The Tekton set is great. Value, quality, warranty. Can’t be beat imo. Mine have been through the wringer, no problems. They are a tool, nothing more.

gearwrench metric on rail sets at advance auto sale is absolute best bang for buck and the best design socket of this class, tekton sockets and ratchets are just average taiwan stuff, nothing fancy, only thing tekton do well is the warranty and I don't expect that to stay same forever .

I've had great experiences with Husky warranty help dealing with clearly abused ratchets. I just wish they had a better socket set (good socket section with no fillers).

For home use, or even a new pro starting out, Craftsman's made-in-china 299 pc socket set (every size 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2" sae/metric standard/deep socket they currently make) for ~$300 is very hard to beat. Even more so if you are a Shop Your Way member and have some SYW or Freecash points to knock that price down even more to well below $1 per piece.

I paid less than $250 delivered, and on top of that got ~$50-60 in freecash for the purchase which I used a week or two later to get SEA and metric sets of offset wrenches for $0.

I still have pretty much all of the same Craftsman sockets from made-in-USA days gone by, but I've been setting up a new box in the garage and moving my old ones out back to the shop where they're needed a lot less often. The thinking was that way if/when I do break a socket (never have yet though, old or new) it'll more likely be the newer chinesium one same as they would want to replace it with.

I've been putting them to use same as I always have and as far as use I don't notice much of a difference though. I can only recall a few instances where I needed a mid-length socket (Craftsman doesn't make them anymore - Gearwrench does though) or a deep with full depth broaching (new are shallow broached- which is good in many cases but not always).

All in all, made in China or not, they're good sockets. I looked at other comparable quality /guarantee brands, like Gearwrench and Tekton, for example, but for the price of filling out a full set I didn't find anything else even close.

I'm a little ocd about having a matching set of sockets I guess that's why I'm most likely getting the gearwrench from AAP that plus I need to replace all the noname stuff that falls off the ratchets
