socket trays???

several months back( last winter maybe) there was a discussion of metal socket trays several pages long if I remember, and one member was making some of his own could use some help locating this thread.
My goal is to find info on a socket tray my Dad has/had when I was growing up it held deep 1/4 drive sockets and if I remeber it was black & had the flip over bail to hold them into place. I never appreciated it back then,but now reallize just how handy that lil' son of a gun was. You could grab it and your favorite 1/4 " ratchet maybe a couple of screwdrivers,and take care of a lot of things especially interior work on your car without having to back out & head back to the toolbox.
Would like to find another just like it or similar

I hate metal socket trays. If you have ever dumped one into an engine bay you'd know what I'm talking about. I like the magnetic trays or a rail

After seeing the custom built trays above, Elroy started to Jones for some real socket trays. Took some measurements and sketched up a tray. Ran it out of 20 Ga. stainless on a Vipros 357 CNC during a production run at work.

These didn't come off the truck. They came off the Cincinnati Form Master.

all the trucks used to sell sockets in those metal trays. years ago i bought several extra trays from SO.
most of my sockets are in trays, some in MTS magnetic holders, i really dont like metal socket rails and clips.
i dont remove complete sets from my box to work on anything. i grab what i need to do the job.

Elroy can't recall ever making that bonehead mistake. Venture to say it comes down to paying attention to what one is doing.

Nothing ***** the big one worst than magnetized tools. You can have all the magnetized tools you want. I watch Elroy disposes of tools under such influence.

The basis of Elroy's post was to simply point out just how badly magnetized tools ****. There's nothing worse than contaminating your work with iron filling and other metallic **** using tools that are the Swiffer Duster of floor sweepings.

Besides that it took Elroy a year to find the time to finish one of his trays. Elroy always has a few projects in the works and each of these jobs have their own level of priorities. It's also Elroy's opinion that Hansen Trays simply take up too much room in the tool box. These custom stainless socket trays perform well for Elroy and I have yet to see him dump it over. Feel free to duplicate if you wish

Considering how bad stainless galls with itself, Elroy didn't want any metal to metal contact so he wanted to incorporate these nylon washers

Initially Elroy wanted to set the rivets from the inside of the tray as shown above. This would place the formed end of the rivet at the thicker material. One little problem, the rivet gun was too big to fit inside the tray so Elroy set them from the outside

And the best thing is, the sockets don't fall out
