I occasionally run across these "socketeer" sets and have not given them much thought. My interest was recently peaked when I found them in a 1955 challenger catalog. I suppose this means they were a penens product...

Do the ell handles have any designations on them? Detent ball, or just pressed tab to retain sockets on each end?

For some reason I for one have a hard time imagining a mechanic working in a shop using that set I don't know ? Seems like something sold over the counter at the five & Dime store to a typical susy homemaker for having around the house; but then again I could be wrong?:dunno:

Well, that solves the mystery that I've pondered for a long time. I would find these sockets and L handles in mixed batches of old hand tools. I've never come across the plastic Socketeer bag but I bet that I have about half dozen full sets of these sitting in a pail in the shop.

I would agree that they were very likely five and dime store kits for people looking to do small things inside the home. They certainly don't appear like they would hold up to any heavy use.

Thanks for posting this!
