Tekton is a good choice. I’d look at Capri too as they are having a sale they seem to always be forgotten about they are amazing quality both. Williams is also really good so is Sunex, SK, Proto, Wright, Grey Pneumatic, Pittsburgh Pro. Even the newer Craftsman is ok for sockets now made in Taiwan instead of China. I had one of my old USA sockets warrantied and the Taiwan one isn’t too bad I’ve used it just about everyday since I got it no issues. Gearwrench I’d write off my list now they are Chinese made and don’t seem to be as quality as they used to be anymore.

The Gearwrench sets, 1/4", 3/8", 1/2" I have all say Made in Taiwan.

Ken

They still have old stock that is Taiwan but all new ones are China it’s really disappointing. It would be different if they seemed quality but they aren’t anymore.

Yep it’s unfortunate. I got a Craftsman socket warrantied the other day and received a Taiwan that seems more quality than the new Gearwrench stuff. If that says anything about it. Now I’m likely to buy new Craftsman over the Gearwrench.

Yeah I get it. I still however am not a fan of crapsman but I really never have been to start with. I have never had very good luck with them in the past.

Lol well I have to say a hassle free warranty for sure. I didn’t even send them pictures they had a new one in the mail I got it on Christmas Eve how convenient lol. Didn’t have to send the old ones back either which is good because it was one with the knurling on the top. I like their USA stuff for fill ins in my sockets and wrenches that and many other brands. I cracked a lot of them here recently though and broke a lot of their ratchets it’s a shame especially since towards the end of the USA time for them which is when some of my stuff is from that has broke. Lately I’ve been using Capri though they are excellent quality.

I hate to admit it but I am very short on sockets and I would just prefer to order a complete set of 1/4,3/8, 1/2 in both metric/standard/tall/short/6/12 point; the whole deal. Any recommendations? I can spend a grand but would rather not...

Tekton had a deal going on 350 for metric or standard 1/4,3/8,1/2 all 3 sets with ratchets and a couple extensions I believe.

I bought mostly SK when I was working. Retirement budget dictated lesser prices. I've found great deals on NOS Blackhawk (markings aren't the best), Gearwrench, and Tekton.

My ideals push me toward domestic but I can't afford US made sockets that won't get used much. Anything in sockets that I'm buying now are the more obscure (to me).

If it were me.......I'd jump all over that Tekton deal.

Many years ago while talking to a mechanic about tools. I was extolling the Craftsman warranty. He said you don't want to have to use warranty. Better tools don't need warranty. It's a common sentiment .

I switched trades and ended up pulling on wrenches. With 50 years experience, I think he was wrong. Sockets break. Even tough, clunky ones do. Maybe not as often. chuckle It's my opinion that flank drive was brought out to get rid of stress corners, that's where I have broken sockets, not for better contact, just lower warranty claims. They all have it now. Or should. It's a good feature, it makes a thinner walled socket tougher.

Some or most of the offerings in this thread are either out of stock/no longer available.

Any up to date advice?
I'm looking for some complete no skips sets.

I'd still just place an order at tekton. For someone that just needs a socket set, piecing something together of varying brands won't make a difference.

I agree with the mechanic you were talking to. I can't count the number of times I had to run into town in the middle of a job because the damn Crapsman socket split. I finally bought a set of SK and solved the problem. That (now) mixed set of Crapsman sockets is now my backup, but have never had to use them except for lost sockets.
