Somebody local has 400 watt sodium lights for sale. They look like they are about 12" around with a fluted glass globe.

Can I use these inside of my garage?

You CAN, but you won't WANT to. Sodium lights(Low or High Pressure) give off a strong orange light(low moreso than high pressure) Like most street lights.

You will find them very undesirable to work under, or even be around. Sodium is used as general purpose lighting for yard lights, street lights, security lights, etc, because of its lumen output per watt is good. Otherwise, its not useful to the individual in their garage.

Fully agree. TERRIBLE light for anything other than security.

Also, the voltage is probably not conducive to your shop. Probably 208V or 277V.
Wiring shop lights even @ 240v can be a pain and not worth it. Not for a small home shop at least.

If those were metal halide & have either a 120V or multi-tap ballast, those would be a nice shop lighting fixture, but the amber color of HPS ***** indoors, they do have metal halide lamps to retrofit HPS fixtures but IMHO they are not worth the trouble or cost. BTW, the monochromatic yellow color of LPS low pressure sodium is even worse then HPS.
