Just moved into a new to me house last weekend. Garage walls are insulated and have osb on one wall and drywall (unfinished) on the other walls. The ceiling is unfinished. I am going to put up vapor barrier and blown in insulation. But what to do for the ceiling? I'm by myself now (wife left me, and now I'm much happier :bounce: So I don't really have any help. I don't want drywall because I can't manage it by myself. Same for metal. I was thinking unvented vinyl soffit material. It's white, bright, finished and easy for me to put up. Has anyone done this and have pics?

Also, can I use my pneumatic stapler to install it?

Don't ask.
I bought a cheap (About $150) drywall lift when I did one shed. Since then it's been used by several friends and relatives for drywall, OSB and metal ceilings. Makes it easy for one guy working alone.

I put tongue and groove on the ceiling of a room in my basement. Like you, I didn't want to mess with hanging drywall on the ceiling.

I used soffit material in my shop and I love it. I had help though. It comes in 12' lengths and it is floppy so it would be quite difficult to do alone. You need to use roofing nails so it can expand and contract. Staples won't allow it to do that. Sorry no pictures right now.

Would work just fine if its easier for you to install, and Vinyl will expand and contract in the summer and winter, you can use aluminum soffit and use the air stapler but vinyl will need nails, it will have slots just like vinyl siding. You don't nail them tight just close that way it can move around the nail in the slot.

Ok that's what I thought. T&G sounds like a good option. Can I buy it pre painted white? The less work the better. I need to get this done so I can set up my shop and get to work.

^^^ I agree with ryan. IMO aluminum soffit looks better but will dent easy. Just use pan head screws with vinyl soffit. I believe there is a commercial line of soffit that wont sag as much.

Keep in mind a flare up , say from good backfire from a carb or such thing and vinyl may want you to think twice . Not sure what kind of work you do but seen lots of soot stained ceilings from trying to start a car with pouring gas down the carb.

^^^ good point. Nix the vinyl, go with aluminum. I've installed full 12' sheets of aluminum soffit by myself. It's tricky but doable. The stapler would work for this but I would use screws to set the sheet in case you need to pull it down.

How about pre-painted, white hard board? Basically 1/8 inch pegboard without the holes.Would that sag? Strapping is on 12" centers.

Search CL or buy a drywall lift, use and resell. White ribbed metal up and done would be my preference. I did the house garage ceiling myself.

I used unvented aluminium white soffit for my 12' ceiling in my 3 car garage and I am very happy with it. I strapped the ceiling very 24" and screwed the material with white screws. Looks very clean and was easy to do without any help. I used scaffolds on casters that I moved around.

I copied the aluminum unvented soffit from someone here on gj,looks great and only needed a helping hand every once in a while(wife). The only thing I should have done was to over lap the length of the soffit ends in a direction that cannot be noticed from the entrance. The way I did it, (wrong) you cannot notice the overlap from inside.

yep, I mentioned I was thinking of doing this in my new garage and the builder who did my shell and slap said that to me. Start in the back he says and work forward to hide your **** ends.

I would check to see how much weight that soffit materiel would hold, I'm betting it will sag when its backfilled with 10 to 12 " of cellulose. They make a product that looks like beadboard for porch ceilings but its not made to hold weight either. I used 12' metal panels in mine and installed them by myself with the help of a rented drywall lift.
