Soffit recommendations

I’m putting an addition on my house while also replacing the roof on the old portion. I’m looking at replacing the old plywood soffit with new aluminum vented soffit. My contractor is fond of the Rollex brand as it’s local and the lumberyard takes him on fishing trips. Is there a big difference between brands, they seem pretty cheaply made and I’m debating just purchasing the Menards brand as it’s significantly cheaper. Thoughts or opinions on who has done this or anyone who could lead me in the right direction?

My guess menards is not much if any different somethings just seem more expensive at local home stores. My guess is you will never know the difference but the contractor may not want to install the other stuff because he doesn’t know it or some other ****.

That’s what I was thinking too. In a small town people like to say the local lumber yards products are better but never say why. I get thicker aluminum, or better finish, but using the term “better” generally speaking doesn’t go that far to me when it’s 30% more expensive.

One Hand Washes The Other, I too also live in a smaller city and sometimes throw a little business to my local hardware store to help him keep his doors open. My local store knows who I am, at the Big Box Store they don't know me and probably don't care.

Menards coil/soffitt is slightly larger than paper. I used both brands last year and Rollex is miles ahead of anything Menards sells. Buy a roll of Menards coil stock, then get some Rollex coil and you'll know the difference, instantly. That said, once installed, if done properly, it should be fine. Just tell the installers don't put it up on a windy day.

For a house addition your saving is negligible. Buy the good stuff.

This right here, I used stuff from home depot which is equivalent to the Menards stuff. I fondled some Rollex stuff at the local building place it was way nicer, better paint(scratch resistance) and thicker metal were the two things I noticed.


I bought some rolled stock that was Rollex brand, way nicer to work with.

Interesting feedback, I appreciate all he responses. It appears Menards is .019 inches thick and Rollex is .019 gauge which would make Rollex thicker. It’s interesting they are both .019 but different measurements

So menards is .019" and Rollex is .04375". Over twice as thick.
