I will be framing the soffit returns on my garage this weekend. I took this picture from a house under constuction near me. Is this proper way to do it or is there a better way?

Looks great, I assume you're going to continue down the wall so your lower eve stays flat? What are you using for soffit material?

The return shown in the picture is a standard 'porkchop' soffit return. It looks a little sloppy but is preferable to what I see new home building companies doing quite often in my area. They place porkchops on the front face of houses but do returns at the rear that are run flush with the back wall of the house. The soffit on the barge rafter runs at an angle all the way down to the fascia on the side of the house. The porkchop is replaced by a single 2x6 block that connects the side soffit to the side wall.
I think the reason this is done is primarily to save the builder some money as each porkchop soffit return costs 15-20$ while the 2x6 block return does not appear on their price lists.
There are other return options (greek/pigeon ledge variants or larger porkchops) but since it is your garage project I would just keep it simple and do it the right way.

I'm going to have someone wrap it with aluminum to match the house.

Either one is proper. Without looking at their own house, most people that has either could not tell you what type they had. The first one I/we always called "boxing in the eave". Go with what matches the house or what suits the look you want. One year down the road and you won't even notice.

How hard is it to do the aluminum soffit and fascia yourself?

adammopar Im a siding contractor one little hint you dont vent a gable it is usless to use a vent panel on your gable soffit runs .On your straight runs it is fine the principle of soffet vents is for the air to enter at the soffet and travel up the inside of your roof and out you roof vents. This is done to cool your shingles. Also if you have wall vents along with sofetvents and roof vents you are defeting all vents.

Just my opinion, but the way the OP is doing it looks better. It looks more finished to me, but again, just my opinion. Both ways work well. Oh, another thing markzrt1, if you plan on putting security lights or just area lights in general, you might block that corner accordingly and prewire it for the lighting.

Ive always thought those boxes look odd, mainly where they join the facia on the end wall.

Ive always done a simple boxed overhang.

But I also go with big overhangs. This is a 36' overhang.

Anybody have pics of how their soffits end when there is no overhang on the side, using vinyl siding.
