Looking to put up storage up in the top part of the walls - most here seem to call it soffit storage. I was prepared to build the structure and use sliding door hardware for the doors until I received 4 nice metal cabinets from work. They measure 28Hx36Wx18D and 70lbs each empty. I then began to think about just creating a frame at the top of the wall to house each of these to use as the enclosed storage with the least amount of construction.

I was set on this idea until today when I began thinking that the 280lbs is a lot of empty weight. Even though load spread between the bottom ledger and a header board attached to 150" of 18" OC ceiling joists just seems like it would be best to build the entire thing vs trying to use the existing cabinets. Thoughts?

I'd mount the ones from work at normal cabinet heights. Mount direct to the wall and maybe a cleat under it.

Above it I'd custom build a cabinet up to the ceiling. Build sliding panel doors on that. Check out the setup jack Olsen has.

I agree perhaps I am just over thinking the weight of the cabinets with no real reason.
