I'm getting closer to finishing my garage. Just soffits and siding.
Regarding soffits:
How would you strap and finish the soffits?

I already installed some facia so that I could get the eaves troughs on.

I'd be okay with vinyl. (My last soffits were plywood - 45 years ago :) )

Yes, 8 foot doors wouls have been nice.

I assume you will want to some what match the house, so that limits your selection.

If you are not concerned about matching, then the typical aluminum vented soffit. I might be temped to redo the soffit on the rest of the house to match the new construction. You will need channels at the wall, facia and the "crotch" of the rafter, unless you frame out out so it is flat. It will last forever with zero maintenance. I put up aluminum soffit thirty years ago and it still looks great.

Also recommend aluminum soffits.
Run a level from the fascia to the wall. Mark 1/2" below that. Run a chalk line. The chalk line will be seen at the bottom of the soffit J (trim). I use staples with a soffit gun but screws work good too, just drive the screws in so the soffit can slide past. J channel screwed into the fascia. Then slide the soffit down into the next piece. Eventually you get to a point that you will have to bend the J channel down to get the last piece or 2 in. Do that on the wall side, the siding J will cover any bent J.

Thanks. Aluminum soffits, as PoorUB suggested too, make good sense. Going straight across would help make the garage look less high. It would be 4' across. I wonder if the aluminum soffit would need any support in the middle. I may add some pot lights. I could redo my porch as well.

Yes, over 3' needs support. In that case get some colored screws and screw into every second rib if 4 rib soffit on that center support. Your framers should have had that support there already.

I would do my best to match the existing structure. One of my pet peeves is when an addition is not even making an effort to mesh in with the existing, or the existing isn't updated to mesh with the new.
