Soffit vents?

I am going with a vaulted ceiling and I was just wondering, are soffit vents needed on a separate garage build? I plan on having a ridge vent on the roof, do I need vents along the soffits also?

Not sure if they're needed, but they look much better than the alternative.

Nothing helps a roof last like good air movement. Design your building with a nice 18" overhang. You can by perfed vinyl soffet material that works out great. Also put the ridge vent in, this allows air to enter the soffits and exit the ridge. Make sure you mantain an air gap in the framing for the air to move between the sheathing and the insulation. Beltfeed is right on-just remember if you insulate to use the baffles which keep an air gap between the insulation and roof boards/decking. They are cheap and readily available at the home centers etc.-Jim

If its an enclosed attic, 1/300th of the attic floor space should be open vent, half in the roof, and half in the soffit.

Sounds good guys, thanks. It'll be an open roof (no attic), but I will go with the soffit vents in conjunction with the ridge vent.
