I may have just made a big mistake. just purchased a SolarCity inverter. It has great specs. 6000 watt, hybrid, 240 vac split phase output, low frequency, etc. But... I've just learned that it's only compatible with a Tesla Powerwall for battery backup. How can this be???

Can anyone shed light on this issue? Thanks, Jim

Post a link.

probably has to do with how it communicates with the batteries
That's a good guess. But many of these inverters support multi-protocol and even then they can charge in "dumb" mode within a range.

It looks to me like a power wall IS an inverter.

I'm finding out that the Tesla Powerwall output isn't 48V but 600VDC.
That doesn't make sense. I think that's maximum "system voltage" on the solar input if you put rapid-shutdowns in series. It's DC input range is actually 60-550V DC. Residential isn't 600V. (Power wall 3).

The H6 was designed specifically for the Tesla Powerwall and only works it. There is no workaround, period. This is well known and a quick google before purchase would have shown this. Now that you have it, it can still be used as an inverter from your panel array to direct feed your house or be grid tied. It will just not work with any other battery solutions.
