Thinning the herd…Very limited production 1943 S-K Catalog 4000W “SocketChest” toolkit project.
This adventure began with a CL purchase of this mysterious vintage S-K toolbox….Seller bought the box from a farm sale in Brentwood, Ca from the family of the original purchaser-box still smells like grease and lube inside !
Many thanks at the time to Private Lugnutz who found the original S-K print ad online, thus identifying this odd ( and rarely seen) duck.
The box is unique in that the 3/4 drive set is stowed in the very bottom, and the tools are accessible by lowering the hinged lower front cover downward-the tray and upper lid can remain closed. The box is in very good condition overall ( has great alignments, no damages, minor surface oxidation on some spots) and needs some TLC in the form of an era appropriate leather handle and a new center hasp/latch ( original was paper thin and snapped off)…. I only lightly cleaned it inside/out with WD40 and haven’t monkeyed with it at all.
The original tool tray has had one handle end brazed back on and it was well done long ago. I am including a quart of custom color matched olive drab ( perfectly matched to the original interior color) oil based enamel.
I was able to find an all original cadmium plated (catalog appropriate) S-K 3/4 drive 7 piece socket set, with the original sliding breaker bar and 8 inch extension. It looks like it was never used-I have an era correct 16” extension that was faded chrome; a good friend bead blasted it ( using recycled street sign vinyl chips as media) and it looks like satin brushed cadmium plating-it hasn’t changed appearance in two years.
As a bonus I sourced an extra cad plated 8” extension ( two total included) and era appropriate cadmium 3/4 drive ratchet…..it’s in excellent working order and every piece has perfectly aged patina-they really look like they were all born together.
If interested I’ve got a beautiful 1/4” drive black oxide wartime 1/4” drive socket set and era correct metal box…I’m only missing the handle for the breaker bar…I lost steam and never pursued piecing the DBE wrenches, and 3/8 drive set. I found an era correct full 1/2” drive socket set , but will keep that for now ( it’s in very good condition and I might consider selling it separately).
A nice chance to own a very cool and hard to find piece of S-K vintage tool history.
