How often do you have to clean the gun end of the tip on a soldering gun? I have a weller 140/100 and it wont work right unless i remove the tip and sand it about every day. I have had it for years and it has always been like this.

Your guns plating may have worn off the tip. Get new tips & try again. At one time Home Depot carried new tips in the tools dept. by the soldering stuff.

You should not have to do that at all. Possibly the nuts on the gun are not secure, or there is corrosion on the ends that fit into the gun.

Clean it while it is hot. I clean mine routinely by wiping them on a wad of bronze wool while hot. Others use wet sponges or cloths.

When you are finished using it do you wipe off the tip with a wet sponge and reapply clean solder to store it?

Your question is not clear. What does "won't work right" mean? It won't heat, or it won't properly wet with solder?

If you use it every day, then tinning it which consists of first getting it clean with something like sandpaper needs to happen once a day or so too. Wiping it with a wet paper towel while it's hot can help a little. Getting new tips will help for awhile too.

It is not makeing good contact were the 2 ends of the tip gos in the gun. My gun has set screws and some times it will not heat up or it takes a long time to heat up. But if you loosen up the set screws and retighten them it will be better or if you take the tip out and sand it it will heat up alot faster. I have a new tip for it i will try but i can remember it doing this when it was new.

Your tip is corroded and not making good contact. Easiest thing is to get a new tip. If you have to sand or tighten every day, it has passed its expiration date.
I have a decade old tip that is still good. And seen months old tips die.
