Solid oxygen torch?

Found this among Grandpa's tools. From a quick search, it looks like very few parts are available. How well do these work? Worth piecing back together?

Man, I had one of those 35 years ago. It didn't work too well as I recall. Can you even get the O2 pellets any more?

I got one of those when I was 14 for Christmas the oxygen pellets burn erratically it was not an ideal setup to learn welding on, I did do a lot of brazing with it.

Soaking the pellets in flammable liquid made some interesting fireworks not that I recommend doing that.

+4 The one I had about 25 years ago was dreadful. Could one of the old ones be converted to the newer disposable O2 cylinders? YMMV.

I don't plan to weld with it. I was looking for something closer to oxy/acetalene than propane in order to free rusted bolts and other general heating duties. A propane torch just can't get hot enough for those duties. Sears still sells some of the parts, like the frame and tubes. However, the oxygen side is toast and they don't sell any of that anymore. Think it might have some value to a fellow garagehead or should I just dispose of it?

Junk it, from what you're saying, you're planning to use it when you're already in the middle of a problem. It's doubtful that you're going to solve one problem with another problem

somewhat on the same note though, dont waste your time with the small propane size oxygen cylinder setups either, they run out of gas (oxygen that is ) in just a few minutes.

How about MAPP gas?

+1 for Mapp gas I use mine all the time for general heating of rusty bolts etc instead of using my OA torch set. I use Mapp gas for my horseshoe art when bending them and save $$ instead of OA which has gotten pricey. YMMV.
