I have done a search on here and have some unanswered questions. I have never had a scanner before just code readers so this is all new to me.

How do I know what version of software it has?
Does it matter what version of software it has?
Does the software have to be updated to use it?

Sounds like the updates are pricy. For as little as I will use this and for what I will use it for, updating it probably won't be worth the money for me. This is for sale locally and the price is good enough where I could put it on eBay and make a nice profit if I don't use it.

It will tell you what version it is on the main screen. Depending on how old the update is limits how new of a vehicle you can hook it up to. Newer updates also contain more data and bi-directional ability on older models too. Scanner will always work, just be limited on usage. Global obd may still function on something too new for the update. Used solus pros are going for $500 to $800 depending on update version and whether or not they have Euro. A bit higher if they are updated to 14.4.

The version will be in the lower right side of the screen. Different updates added different things, and the only way to know if it will do what you need is to go into the car you have and see. For example, the newer updates added a lot of diesel tests, so if I was going to do some diesel work I would check some of the trucks and see what was available for that truck. You can usually get pretty deep into the system before you need to hook it up to a car.

Also, check on the Snap on website to make sure it comes with the keys you need for the cars you have. K-20 is a pretty standard key, but the Solus Pro did use keys, and at $10-30 bucks they can get pricy if you have to add a bunch on to use the scanner.
