Got a storm coming. I want to run my generac portable 3000w generator to make sure it working dine, to run out some old gas and get some new treated gas through the system. Do I need to put a load on it for about a 30 minute run?

This title is going to catch hell.
I like / hate how you think. I thought the same.

I've run mine without load before, but never 30 minutes. At idle it will take a lot longer to run out bad gas. When I had to run in my new one, at varying loads, I hooked up some 300-500W halogen lights, my 1500 watt heat gun, an air compressor with the hose open, and something else to keep changing the load every few minutes.

I don't think that you 'need' a load but to check things out I would suggest that you do load it at least some to make sure that the governor and generator work as intended. Me I use an old 1500 watt electric heater.

I try to run mine the first weekend of each month to keep them starting easily. Usually just plug a box fan in and run it for a bit on each generator. Flip the breakers and switches to make sure everything works. I let them run while o do something else so maybe 15 minutes to an hour. Top off the tank with non ethanol gas treated with Stabil when it’s cooled off and gets put away.

You have more discipline and / or time than me. I would probably start skipping months after the first three, then end up only running the generator when the power goes out.

By then it likely wouldn’t start when I need it without tearing into it. I have three generators. I would be happy if I could get at least one to start now.

On the other hand, we had three power outages that I can remember in the past six months. The longest was 45 minutes in a high wind rainstorm. No way was I going out to the shed to start the blasted generator under those conditions.

Do you have a transfer switch?

Easy enough the cut the house over to make sure everything runs.

If not, plug a heater in for a while. Would **** to find out it isn't running right loaded...

I said I “try”. It’s much easier in the summertime lol. I have two, one has battery start so I try to keep the battery up. It’s a beast to pull start.

No, you don't need a load on a generator , let her run. . infact when starting & shutting down it is recommended to take off all the loads.
but as mentioned, a load on it will prove if the power head is functioning .

I trip the breakers in mine and start it up after servicing and warm it up….look things over and shut it down. Then reset the breakers and switch over to automatic.

My understanding is that the reason to add a load is to keep the generator magnetized. If thats stupid then edjeekate me. Why do we run periodically with a load?
And whats the purpose of changing the load with different wattages?

It took me 30 years of generator ownership to get it through my head to run out old gas after two years of non-use and otherwise top off the tank with treated gas every fall. I have always loathed small engines cause they NEVER start until I learned to just care for the gas. I can start mine after a year with 3 pulls, tops.
I also have two generators that I didn't look at until they were needed. Needless to say, they are unuseable at this time. Maybe some day....

I run my 80kw LP chicken barn generator every Monday for around an hour and the PTO genny for the rest of the property for as long as the power is out whenever it goes out. Once in a while the PTO genny gets put on welder duty.

Generators can absolutely be run without a load on them but they won’t get warm and be able to stretch their legs.

Mine is a tri fuel. So far only run on propane. And it has a battery start.

No fouled carb or bad gas issues to worry about.

Just need to charge the battery every so often.

I don’t even really understand the nature of the question. Why wouldn’t it be ok to run without a load?

Neither my Honda nor Ariens generators mention anything in the manual about loading while running.
