My wife and I have been searching for sources and good prices for vinyl flooring for the upstairs attic/art studio/storage/play room....initially we were going to use sheet vinyl....but then the logistics of getting it down around all the junk that is already up there....not pretty.

Note to self: do flooring before you fill the space...

So we decided to go with VCT or the cheaper self stick stuff....it would allow us to be creative in the kids area....

Then I was at Lowes today....laminate for $0.88/sq ft......geezzzz...that is as cheap if not cheaper than any vinyl I could find....a lot easier to install....no glue...no nailing....any my wife gets the 'wood' floor she wanted before the year was out (I never said anything about it being "installed" before the year was out)

Ok...so this is not the best quality stuff....but it is only just a garage....it won't see the traffic the house would.....considering that over 500 sq ft cost me less than $500....I can live with it.

I used the same product from Lowes - inexpensive and relatively easy to install, cleans nice with a swiffer. The first install from 5 years back had integral green felt backing so no extra padding was necessary. Fast forward to 8 months ago, and now you have to by the pad separately while the flooring is the same cost as it was 5 years ago.

Good find ddawg. Should work out nicely.

I need to do our kitchen floor and was thinking of something similar.

However, must take a bit of exception when you write..."but it is only a garage". Lol!

Yea...but the garage is bigger than the house....at least for now....

Larry....I was not planning on using a pad or anything else....it's going down over OSB......floor is about 1" thick.

You should have a two week grace period before you have to get on the install. If the wife says anything about putting the floor down, you can give her the old " I have to let the flooring acclimate to the space" excuse

I used a high gloss version of this same stuff you are using in our study...NOT a good idea. The hard wheels on office chairs (and anything else that is heavy with a small foot print) are going to mark the **** out of this stuff. I should have got the textured style that more closely mimics how a piece of wood might look and that has a non-gloss finish to it. I'll remember that next time FOR SURE! I hope yours goes well!

Hey ddawg I've put laminate in just about every room In my house except for the bathroom. Most Laminates hold up really well and some you have to be very carefull with. I installed the oak estate in my game room that was on sale at home depot for .88 sf. Looks good installed but you really have to watch the chairs as they will scratch the floor if you don't have floor pads on the feet of the chairs. Same thing with the pergo i installed in the kitchen pergo was 4 times more expensive but will still scratch without pads on the bottom of chairs. The cheaper stuff scratch easier so just be careful with it. Don

I'm just curious as to how that's gonna stand up to weld splatter, plasma cutter slag, and grinder dust? <jk>
