Some clarification before I start wiring my shop

I would just like some clarification prior to wiring my shop that I am understanding everything correctly. Not sure how you guys can read those code books.

I plan to use 12 ga wire for everything, mainly cause I have a large roll of 12-3 nm-b now and figure their is no point in going any smaller then that plus I plan to run my outlets off a 20 amp breaker. I assume I will not need anything bigger then 12 ga (except for a few 240v runs which I know I will need 10 ga or possibly 8).

Now for wire staples I understand I must be within 8" of leaving the box whether its the panel, junction box or outlet/switch box and then I need a staple every 4.5' during the run of wire. Is this correct?

Also it is my understanding that at every outlet or switch I need 12" of extra wire outside of the box. Or is it 8"? Also this rule does not apply to a junction box correct?

Does it matter how many wires I put through a hole in a 2x4?

With the questions I have asked the County inspector about my sub panel wiring I am sure they are going to give things a good look and I want to impress them versus them having to come back out because I messed up.

It's within 12 inches, but I usually go around 6-8. And staple every 3 feet or so,it just looks neater that way. As far as wire sticking out its 6 inches past outer part of box, most people grab the wire and stick their thumb out then cut wire after that. Using 12 wire you don't want to have the wire real long or it will be a pain to fit into the box. I like to use deep plastic nail on boxes, this way you have extra space
