some day I will have a functional garage

I recently bought my parents house, they moved 400 km away, and left 36 years of **** behind, as well as 36 years of unfinished renovations.

So I come here for inspiration at night after I've spent the evening working to make this space my own.

I'm on a city lot with a two car garage thats just barely wide enough to call it a two car garage

It started with plywood doors that opened outwards, and one side had been snuck out to the end of the roof overhang to make it deep enough to fit a truck inside

I reframed it where the door belonged, and put a real roll up door in

Then added a second door to match

Still a lot of work to do. The clutter in the garage has been tough to deal with but its getting there. Only the house side has a concrete floor, the second side is still dirt.

In the meantime I had to build a micro garage in the back yard to park my motorcycle and secure my tools while gutting the garage

The entire property is a mess

As is the house, the garage, and there is a decent size workshop in the back yard as well thats in a pretty terrible state of disrepair, but at least I'm not renting anymore. Its a huge project, but at least its mine to do with what I want.

Priorities of course, get the garage into the workspace that I want first, so I have a place to work and the organization that I need to take on the rest of the property.

Thanks all for posting your builds, I'll be stealing your ideas on a regular basis.

Dan

Welcome to GJ. It looks like you have some serious work ahead of you. Take it one day at a time. Get the garage work ready and just start cleaning up the property, that alone will make a difference.

I think I would make a new roof a priority before it causes any damage inside.

Structurally there is nothing wrong where it counts, its overkill if anything. The stuff thats non-load bearing is pretty sketchy, but being non-load bearing its easy to fix.

As for the roof, the most visible section is of course the only section that hasn't been replaced recently. Everything over the living areas has been replaced in the last five years. I have the shingles for that front section already, but I need two days with no rain to replace them.

Tonight I ripped out the last built in cabinet from the garage, hopefully by the end of the week I'll finally have all my Dad's **** moved out of it.

If all goes as planned, I'll pour concrete this weekend to give me a solid level floor :)

Wow! You've got some serious work ahead of you. Do yourself a favor and dedicate one display area for progress pictures to keep you motivated. Some wall that you will see every day as a reminder of where you started.

It looks so overgrown that if you did some severe tree & bush pruning, you would get more light (and space) into the property. It is one thing that will give quick results, cost little, and is a great way to blow off some steam. It feels really good to 'wage war' on the landscape and clear out your view of the property. It will give your spirits a boost when you come home in the evening and see that BIG change to what greets you. Have fun, and give it hell!

You should have seen it before. I've taken two loads of tree cuttings, and by load I mean cab high in the back of my fullsize truck and also cab high on my 18' trailer deck

Trying to leave as much tree cover as possible while its a mess to keep the neighbors from complaining. I'm on a busy street with office buildings across the street where the office workers stand outside on the third floor balcony and smoke and complain about my yard.

Now, time to go dig the dirt garage floor down six inches and get everything ready to mix and pour concrete tomorrow :)
