Some good tips and ideas on fabrication

I ran across this a little while ago. It shows some good ideas on fabbing and welding on an Austin Mini which of course can be used on any car. Some may like it and some may think it's bunk, but for ones like me, it shows some pretty good ideas when it comes to sheet metal. I used to do sheet metal at work but it's been years and years since I've done it to a car to any extent. Hopefully someday I'll pick me up a project once I get my garage addition and a lift, and a sheet metal brake, and, and, and,.....

Project Binky is awesome, I think I found out about it somewhere on here a little while back. Gotta love the British humor that backs up some pretty awesome skills and a cool goal. 8 episodes will keep you occupied for a while though, so allot some time when you sit down to watch the first video lol..

I watched all the episodes a while back I was quite impressed with the guys skill and how easy he made everything looked. It also helps that he had all the rIght equIpment. And it was funny to boot.

I made it through the 8 episodes although I fast forwarded on a few. He does make it look easy, but it does show some good ideas on how to do quite a few things, especially with the cardboard templates. Now I sort of disappointed that it's only up to episode 8. I'm looking forward to seeing it finished up.

Thanks for Kevin. It looks so easy when others do it. Looking forward to watching all the episodes.

Pretty cool build but I am not sure why they bothered starting with a full car given the fact they have replaced almost every panel on it.:lol_hitti

Project Binky is a great mini-web series! A lot of creativity in just the setup; I'm especially fascinated by all of the positioning jigs. I have some episodes to go through still.

I have seen this before. But now I am asking myself if I have seen them all. Oh well I guess I have to go back and watch it again.

From what I could tell there are only 8 episodes so far, unless I may have missed one or two. IIRC without going back through, Episode 8 was in Dec. 2014. I just hope that they keep going until the Mini is completed. I find it interesting and a lot of good ideas.

I have observed this phenomenon many times when watching American iron based "restoration" shows and do not understand it.

A "numbers matching" car is certainly one level of restoration but I have seen many that seem to fall into the 'resto-mod' category where the only original item on the car is the serial number plate from the dash with the rest of it being from a catalog house.

In one example I saw, after they finished the car was put in car shows as "one of only six built by Dodge" based on the serial number.

I agree that every item on the car needed to be replaced. It was a rust bucket and multi-small-animal home when they found it. But to then say it was "one of only six" when they finished was a stretch.

Very interesting video. I wonder how many man hours they have spent on that project. I do a lot of one off fabrication and I may be very slow, but even if those guys are much faster, you're still looking a months of work. Not sure why they started with a clapped out Mini when, at the end of the day, all that's left is the roof and the bonnet and boot lid and the doors (sort of). I guess it was probably cheap and you have to start someplace. Really nice ultra rotisserie assembly jig thing. Some real nice ideas in that.

That'd be my guess; it possibly came around for the right price. A more sound car might've saved them some work, but even if this were the case there wouldn't be much Mini leftover. I wonder if either of them had a 'why-cut up-a-good-car' mentality when looking for a candidate? Assuming of course they had an idea of how much Mini wouldn't be reused.

Why use the rusted clapped out Mini? Because they had it! :D

They started this project in August of 2013! I'm hoping they get it done by the end of this summer - this is strictly a weekend project for the lads, that and how much engineering and fabrication is needed is why it's taking so long, they average an episode every other month.

They claim by the end of the next episode it will be in paint, I'm looking forward to that.

Oh, and the reason they're using the Celica guts is that he stuffed it and it was totaled.....notice they never showed the left rear of the Celica - that's where it was hit.

Did you all catch the "Police Squad" opening music? And all the Monty Python references?

Enjoyed the humor.

Also like the remark when he was using metric dimensions, then said "That's about a 1/4" if you're watching in black and white"

Subtle dig.

Thanks a lot Garage Journal, you've done it again to me....

I had to watch all episodes in a row, and then go back and watch them again, so that's a whole day gone when I should have been doing something more productive, like cutting the rust out of my own Project.

Now I have a head full of crazy dreams that I do not have the skills to follow through and will take 6 months to get out of my head, again....

So now I will have my revenge, check out this mob from Finland.

Video teaser - http://www.mat.fi/video/ford-model-a

Model A Ford with a Cosworth BDA motor in it, 4 cylinder, 250hp at 9500 rpm, cast their own wheels to look like the old wooden spoke wheels, etc.

Juha Kannkannen's Rally Celica, found sitting in a rice paddy in China where it was abandoned when it broke down in 1985, basically they kept the roll cage and suspension mounts and replaced everything else around it.

Many other interesting Projects on this page - http://www.mat.fi/projects

Enjoy....

Seriously though, absolutely enjoyed Project Binky and it will help me,
Thanks for posting it up, can't wait for the next instalment.

I love the humour. Very british humour.

Good find.

The grinder crow and bench for the car are awesome. No less.

Watched all 8 and really liked it. No stupid time drama or anything like that . Great skill and imagination on the project and pleasant to watch. British are so much better at broadcast entertainment.

holdmybeer,
I really enjoyed looking through these pictures! I got curious and went and dug up my school's 1984 copies of Car and Driver and managed to find these pictures of what looks to be the same car, in a different country, however.

Cool stuff. Gotta love the things introduced on this site..

Great, now I have to spend more time reading/watching. Mom, if I watch it in the garage, does it count as a project for "what did you do in your garage today"?

Thoroughly enjoyed this series and all the fab work. Does anyone know why when he MIG welds he blips the trigger right at the end of the bead/weld? Ive watched a ton of MIG videos and MIG weld myself and Ive never seen anyone do that.

I believe he is cleaning off the excess wire to set up for the next set of welds. Not necessary but I have witness guys do this in the past almost unknowingly.
