Some help sourcing HVAC air return parts please...

Hi Guys,

I need to install some additional return ducting upstairs in our home. Three returns, they will be in the ceiling.

I need to purchase the components and am wondering is there a good online source (eBay, etc.) I have never purchased these type of components before.

I want to keep the ceiling openings the same size as the existing return so I can use the same size filters. That return cover would be for a 14"x14"x1" filter.

So I need:

- (3) return covers for a 14"x14"x1" filter
- (3) square ceiling register boxes sized for that 14"x14" cover and then
necked down to fit 8" insulated flexible round tube
- The 8"insulated flexible round tube itself

I'm not familiar with how the measurements are taken with this type of equipment. For example, does a 14" square ceiling register box actually take a 14" square filter? Does the filter cover attach directly to the register box or is there some intermediary part I need to purchase as well?

I see components on eBay, just want to make sure I am getting compatible parts and a complete setup for each return.

I should also mention that the return calcs have been done and this is the additional amount of air I need for the returns, with a bit to spare.

After you go to Home Depot and buy what you think you want, you will appreciate their liberal returns when you exchange the parts you purchased for what you really wanted in the first place.

I realize this may seem like a snarky answer, but there was not enough information in your original posting for me to be more positive.

Thanks that was helpful. What other info is required? From what I can tell from the existing return and from what I discussed with my installer, I need what I listed. I'll do the rough in for the returns and he will come by and do the hook up to the air handler in the attic crawlspace.

I guess I'll just ask him about it.

If you search 14x14 filter grill it should take a 14x14 filter, there will be flange on the outside that makes it bigger but the size listed should be the filter size.

14x14 "filter grill"
14x14x10 "ceiling box" or "square to round" maybe 14x14x12, whatever is in stock
10x8 "reducer" or 12x8 depending on what box was in stock
8 inch "ells" you'll want those to keep from kinking the return
8 inch "flex" typically comes 25ft compressed in a box or bag.

Maybe you have an HVAC supply near you? Or, maybe your Home Depot will have it.
