My dad did something similar to his vise, but he didn't remove the jaws. Nothing unusual to me.

In all fairness, its a nice looking vise. Those old ones have clean lines for sure.

My dad's name was Jasper. We would call that "Jasperized". He lived through the depression and by golly he made things work, one way or another.

They are a vary specialized form of cellulose matrix jaw – CMJ to those who use them. There is a steep price to be paid for not using them according to the procedures set out in the certification documentation. You do have the proper certification to use them don’t you? We cannot explain further until your certification is verified.

At least the rest of the vise is being treated well. Original jaws can easily be restored.
