You know how much time that's going to save you next time you need one of those things. You going to walk over and get it.

Now the next big thing to do (which I have a problem with) is after you take something out of it's container, is if you don't use it, put it back. I'm forever getting bolts out my bolt bin and then throwing the ones I don't use in a cup on the bench. Then spending hours sorting and putting them back where they belong.

I really have not been able to think in terms of future, while I am sorting all the stuff, all I can think of is how much effort and time I have put into moving, storing, and sorting it. I really wanted to just throw most of it away, but I know that it is expensive and I know that I will use it eventually. I will say that I most likely need less than half the quantities that I have, but since it is organized and I have room, I feel there is no real harm in keeping it.

If I start running out of room, well then it will be a different story. I am going to try and keep some space open in each drawer for future use. My old self would try and fill every inch of space.

As for putting hardware back, I am notorious for that as well. My plan is to have a bin that is for sorting later, that way I can toss it in the bin, then sort it monthly or when ever I have a chance. Some of the hardware that I have a lot of, I end up just tossing extras into the scrap bin when I am done.

Directly in the crusher, if it will make you feel better there was no battery tray in there, really, especially not one from Tennessee with no rust at all, really there was nothing like that.

I actually took a 1978 Monte and put it on a 3/4 ton 4x4 chevy truck frame. That was as far as I got, I really did not have a place to work on it, so I gave up on it.

I have been burning for a couple hours now, pile is all gone and I have been collecting downed branches from everywhere. I cut a couple of trees down and put them on the pile, but they still have leaves on them and that is making a mess. I will just keep tossing dead stuff on and then I can wait until all the leaves are gone before I start cutting up the other trees.

I am planning on working on the stockroom for a little bit this afternoon.

I have another GJ member coming over to buy my air compressor on Sunday. Now I have to get my *** in gear and start setting up the big quincy.

The rain held off longer than I expected, so I cleared some more of the saplings and almost all of the sumac. I got most of it burned, the rain kind of put a damper on what was left. I figure I will have another burn pile soon enough anyways.

I will update more tomorrow, I have to load tools and supplies for a job that I am doing on Monday. Then I will be gone for a few days, so it may be a while before I get to do more.

Today was pretty productive, I got to sell a tool and meet a GJ member! It was interesting to meet someone that has been following my mess, I mean thread. He ended up buying the "little" compressor and then I gave him the library cart that I was going to scrap. Now I am forced to get my *** in gear and get the "big" compressor running.

How are you making out on organizing stock?

I just went through a whole bunch of loose stuff and found that bagging things in clear plastic made handling, storing and organizing MUCH easier (use air-pack bags with heat sealer and various zip-lock bags).

Slow, I am using my plastic containers to start with. When I run out of bins, I would absolutely consider using plastic bags with a heat sealer.

None of my business Strouty, but I disagree with the heat sealer idea. 'cause when you need to get something out, you're going to have to rip the bag and re-seal it. JMO I think some zip lock would be less time consuming.

Valid point, just depends on what I am planning on storing in them. I have lots of hardware that could be sealed, then if I need it for a job, I can grab and go. I do have and use many ziploc bags, they are great, just make sure you use the "storage" or "freezer" bags. The regular sandwich bags are to thin. I also have lots of small heavy duty ones for small parts. I would not use the heat sealer for anything that would be used all the time, but deep storage would be a good place to use them.

At this point, I have more or less shuffled things around, but it has freed up multiple drawers and shelves. I figure it will take me a lot longer than I think it will.

WOW, just went through the thread, truly a lot of effort to be able to get the BIG RIG in.
I just finished hauling in 15 tons of misc.scrap so I can appreciate what your going through.

I am not at 15 tons, but I have been busy. I am definitely not stopping. This winter will be nice, I will actually be able to use the shop.

It will end up being a cut and paste project. I want to make a utility truck out of it, but for now it will just be a big truck. I need to learn more about it. Who knows, it may end up being a separate thread.

I woke up friday morning and felt like absolute ****. I had to start a job, made it until noon, then took it easy. Saturday was even worse, today is a little better. I don't know why I am such a baby when I get sick.

We had some snow today, and it is freaking me out. I am no where near ready, so this next week is going to be a very tough week for me. I have two jobs that got messed up due to days of rain, so now I need to finish those. This is the time that I wish I still had an employee to help me out.

Of course being sick allowed me to spend some quality time on the steel soldiers forum, and now I want to make a my new truck into a baby HEMTT. Go figure, I all ready found a cab, just need the funds!

Tomorrow will make or break me for the week. If I can get my bucket truck to a job site and get it to the locations that I think I can, all will be well. If not, the week is going to be bad.

Well I got the job done with the bucket truck and I got the truck out without having to do any recovery work.

I was supposed to pick up some machines that I bought a few weeks back, but I found out that the one that was supposed to weigh 6500 pounds actually weighs over 15,000 pounds. So now I have to arrange to get the tractor trailer to pick them up. Then A_Pmech has almost convinced me to keep the four spindle drill press, guess it will depend on the condition of it. Here are some pictures of the machines:

I started tearing apart an older truck that was saved for the engine and transmission. I actually cut off about 15 feet of frame. Now I just need to figure out what to do with the rest of it. I am thinking for now, I may make a makeshift trailer so I can move it easily. I just need to figure out the best way to do it. I would love to break it down the rest of the way, but it makes a noise storage cover for the good parts.

I made the Ford smaller.

If I can just reconfigure it a bit I should be able to make it feel a lot bigger. Of course that is a little bit of an excuse. I need to watch what I buy, at least I have still been moving forward and cleaning things up. I wish progress would be faster, but I have to finish two jobs so I can pay the bills. I am still freaking out a little bit because the snow will be coming and I am NOT ready for it. If it can hold off for a couple of weeks I will be all set.

Nope, but that was for the area limited to the stockroom, I can't do what you did.
I have tossed a bunch of things that I could not identify, I gave away stuff to a few people that needed it, and I sold some supplies to a customer. After I get the outside area ready for the winter, I will be getting back to the stock room.

Today I got a few things moved around outside, I am hoping to sneak some more time in tomorrow so I can get the steel for the future bridge crane put out of harms way. It has only been sitting outside for like six years, so I guess it can wait a few more years. I also got the remnants of the ford inside, I think I am going to weld some feet on the frame rails and then weld a few pieces of steel so the chains won't slide around when I move it again. I really wish I could air up the tire, but the compressor still needs to be assembled.

I got all of the bridge crane's steel unloaded and organized in its new home. I really hope that I get to actually install it next year. That was one of those deals that I could not pass up, I paid less than scrap price for it and then sold one of the electric chain hoists for $300. I am moving a few more things outside, then I have to take a load to my Dad's shop. It looks like I will have one more decent sized load for scrap, just not sure when I will get to it. I am making the pile out of the way, yet I should be able to get to it even after the snow comes. I will update later with actual pictures. Hope everyone is having a productive day!

Looking good Strouty! What about a putting short frame with a standard dually pick up bed on that Ford? I've wanted to do that with a GMC for a while now, kind of like a bootleg version of a Topkick.

I always liked those trucks, in a weird way. If I was just hauling an RV or some specialty show trailer I would be all over that type of truck. I am more utilitarian, so I need it to be work friendly as well. The Ford has some issues with the title. Basically, no way to get the title, no fault of mine, but still no way. I actually know who holds the title and until the guy who pawned it off on me pays him the title is never getting released. I guess I am lucky he doesn't care about the truck itself, just the fact that the other guy effed him over. I am pretty sure I will be essentially doing that with the 5 ton military truck. I have always wanted to have a nice heavy duty 4x4 truck. The other truck I would love to make is one like this:

I spent a bunch of time moving the rest of the steel around outside. Pretty much the front is ready for snow, now I have to concentrate on the back side of the shop.

All the steel for the bridge crane fit nicely and neatly in one pile. I had room to stack some I-beams on top of it as well.



I got the last load of items to go to my Dad's shop. I am glad to have them finally leave.




I set up my scrap pile so it would be out of the way, but still reachable when the snow comes.




There is still a few pallets of things that need to be moved, but it should be pretty easy to get that stuff done, I was running low on daylight and needed to get some paperwork done before I headed home anyways. So this is where I left it for now, I think it looks a lot better than when I started.

Tomorrow we are going to pick up the machines, I will post some pictures when we get things loaded. Hopefully I can turn the grinder around quickly. I still have not decided if I am keeping the drill press yet. Once I see the condition and how heavy it actually is, I will make up my mind. On a good note, I got one of the last two jobs done today, so I only have one more to get done. Then I can dedicate more time to the shop!
