Yeah, you would like these, they are 6" square ⅜" thick. I paid about $10 for each one, the shorter ones are 40" and some of them are almost 60". Dale bought them for $5 each and I offered him $15 each he told me $10 was plenty. I like Dale. We did some horse trading and he delivered them to me and I gave him some long but small I-beams (twenty five feet long), I ended up $100 up, so I can't complain.

I got the 5 ton all finished, it took longer than I thought because of the little things, but it is done and it almost starts every time. The shut off solenoid seems to stick, so I will have to investigate that, it is fairly easy to make it work, you crank it for a minute, then stop and listen for the click, then it will start right up, seriously about half a revolution. I did not realize how fast these suckers cranked over. Anyways now I need to install the little solar float charger, that will keep it topped off if I am not using it.

Clean battery compartment? Check!

Government issued wood blocks? Check!

Two batteries installed? Done!

Next two batteries installed.

Battery hold downs installed.

Wiring hooked up correctly? DONE! :3gears:

Thanks ½ cup, I had to post pictures so Nines could drool. Although I am kind of jealous that he has 2" tops, mine are only 1 ½".

These are the table tops to go with the legs. I just need to order the steel for the horizontal braces. I am going to build the frames first then figure out how to attach the tops. Part of me thinks just weld them, the other part thinks they should be bolted. These are not going to be for fabrication, but more for general work and beating on things.

Those are some SERIOUS table tops. Makes my 1.5" plywood tops and the other stainless tops (~1/8") seem puny.

The worst part was I had two full sheets, I guess plates? of them, both were 5' by 10' and 1.5" thick. I got them for a case of beer (seriously). At the time I didn't want a really big bench, but I wanted a heavy-duty work bench, so I had one cut in half and traded the other one for some materials and labor. I kick myself now, as I figured I could have made the large table and just let it sit outside. Then if I needed it I could have brought it around, live and learn. At least these will make some nice benches and I do have a large bench, but it has a thinner top. Honestly I can't even remember the dimension of the damn thing, it is currently supporting a bunch of junk that should be put away.

The good thing is since I got the crane out it is all ready to use for the compressor tank and the water pump has proven itself. Now I just need to hook up the pressure washer and make contact with the air tank!

Strouty: you could probably cut those 1.5 inch plates in half again and have 4 nice welding tables that you can use like saw horses for a huge project and manage to move them around fairly easily. moving that 5 x 10 table after you put legs on it wouldn't have been something you wanted to do often.

nice that you now have internet at the shop. also nice work getting all the batteries that you said you were going to not buy when you started taking it apart last week. that 5 ton is a helluva truck.

you can fill up a white board on projects you finished this last 10 days. happy to see you making progress and hopefully i can make some myself.

cheers

Drives, If I cut them up I wouldn't have enough legs! I have several tables and some seriously heavy sawhorses, these are going to be my benches and with the forklift, they should be easy enough to move around.

Nines, that is still a good size and I would love to have a thicker piece like that.

Strouty: i know you have some 2 inch tubing or angle iron or you can buy some to make smaller tables, but if you want a 10 foot long table then I wish you the best.

here's something similar to what i'm talking about and going to build for myself once i figure out how to weld and get the space cleaned and ready to use them.

i need to figure out a way to raise the shorter tables so i can have 2 or 3 the same height for big projects, but i'm sure something will come to me maybe with hydraulic jacks sort of like the way the white table moves up so you can roll it around.

cheers and have a great day

Strouty: here's one of the nicest big welding or layout tables I've seen that another member's friend built and those are 8 inch vises on each end that weigh about 250 pounds each. posting some pictures in case you hadn't seen this one which might look close to what you are thinking of building with your steel.

Now that's a table! I feel like the process would be:
1. Pour Cement slab.
2. Build table.
3. Build building around table.

Hey Strouty, will you sell me 1 or 2 of those? You can deliver them on your next trip up here.

The twelve are those are spoken for, but I do have some 1/4" wall 4" square stock, what are you looking to make? I am sure I can help you out. Just give me a call sometime and we can discuss it.

I also dug out the sink I want to use for my all in one water station.
Strouty, that's a nice sink for a shop. I have a deep laundry sink in my garage and it originally had a faucet like yours. Because I couldn't rinse out 5-gallon bucket, I replaced the faucet that was like yours with a goose-neck style. This laundry style sells for less than $50.

This kitchen style sells for about $60:

Bob, I plan on getting something like that for sure. I would actually like to get a combo one like they have in the big kitchens that has the sprayer as well.

Strouty: if you already have a big table in the shop do you really need another one or two more? or do you have wall space for a big workbench?

having a couple like this welding table might be a better option for your space and build them the same height as your big layout table in case you need to do some tower repair or fabrication work and need a longer length.

The new benches are going to be along the wall, I am probably going to sell one of them. There is no way you are going to convince me to make them shorter! :bounce:

Strouty: i won't ask what wall because in all the pictures i didn't see one empty. :D

if you have the spot and the talent to make those plates into benches i'd even help you move them a few inches after the fork lift got them close if i lived near you.

cheers buddy

I'm doing a big clean up too. I'm trying to avoid having spare horizontal spaces as that's where my junk accumulates.

I suggest you avoid having those tables to gather stuff.

Drives, thanks for the offer, maybe I will move closer. As for the wall, I am just hiding it behind things.

Damiansd, I agree and I have probably proven your point, but I need a good heavy bench to use on a daily basis. My goals are to find homes for everything and stop leaving things floating around, I have been getting better, but as always it is a work in progress. I figure even if I need to clean off a section when I really need it, at least I will have it. The big fab table is really too big and I have thought about making it into two smaller tables that can lock together when needed. I have a nice vise that I want to mount to one of these tables, all my other small surfaces are just too flimsy or delicate to really beat on and these will fit the bill nicely.

I have a really short table that I leave outside, that one is great for certain tasks and terrible for others. Then I have another smaller top that is going to become my welding cart on steroids. It is definitely a slow process, but I have a fairly clear vision of what things will look like when I am done.

Strouty: i know you'll find a wall just like you are finding a wall for the Lista cabinets. so best of luck with that.

Nines: that enabling thing you mention is like the pot calling the kettle black. i think one of my storage units is full of good deals you thought i should buy. :D

BTW the last pictures you took of your shop it looked pretty organized on your personal thread so i'll need updates.

cheers
