I've got to move out of the garage I have now :( while I'm going through everything I've got boxes for recycling, donation, and for the fist time started a box of "to sell" for craigslist and eBay.

I wish I could move the cabinets into the stockroom with the forklift, but there is not enough room to get it in there. I would be able to use the pallet jack, but the cabinets are not tall enough to get the pallet jack under them.

Just an idea here... pick the cabinet up a few inches with the forklift, place some blocking (2X4, cinder blocks, something) under the sides, slip the forklift out and THEN put the pallet jack under it. That will make it easier to get into the stock room. Once in the stock room block it up. You can leave it that way or use a jack or prybar to get it off of the blocks.

I can feel your pain, I have had to move before and it was awful.

I can try that, but I may not even have enough room when it comes to the 60" vidmar. I can handle moving them around, it just ***** that it is so hot in here. I think next project is to work on the air conditioners.

....or you knock together a quick pallet and just leave it on there. It might come in handy later. ...or use some of that 80/20 with the casters and make it a mobile cabinet.

...oh wait a minute... you were going to send that 80/20 to me....

I think that the temperature just topped 100° F here. I was out in the woodworking shop (portable building) with the fans going full blast. You know its time for a break when the dogs are panting outside and refuse to move until I start to the house.

Breaking down the 8020 took longer than I thought, but it is all apart and put away, here is the aftermath:

I also got the plymovent put away on the shelf below the 8020.

All cleaned up!

Then I got to cleaning out the stockroom shelves that were going to be moved so the large vidmar could go in there.

I rushed to get the cabinet in there, tomorrow I need to cut down some of my shelving so it can go in top of all the cabinets I just moved.

I even got a chance to clean up outside just a bit. Now if I can just get the shelves cut down and get things put back together I will feel a lo better.

It is some hot and humid inside my shop today, I wish I could have one of my AC units installed and running. Now I am in the middle of moving shelving and small parts. Life goes on.

Of course this is actually clean compared to what it was on Wednesday. I also have stuff outside that I moved temporarily, but have no place to put it except back in the garage. Also some of it may look organized, but it is more "containerized" than organized. I just buy more storage to "sort" the mess. I know I am a borderline hoarder (Bill would be proud!), just the thought of taking away some of my cabinets is freaking me out. I have some awesome tools and some great storage supplies, but they are all underutilized and I don't really understand why it is so hard for me to get it under control. I have a small forklift, but it is a burden because it is battery operated so I can't store it outside during the colder months. Then I have multiple tools that I intend to repair and they take up a lot of room.

Here is some of the stuff outside

What is the truck that is on the side of the pic?????

What is the truck that is on the side of the pic?????

It used to be a 16' beverage truck, my GF called her Bev, so it stuck. It has been converted a few times, first I had it hollowed out to use as a utility truck, but the sites I would go to were steep and the *** end dragged. I decided to make more of a hot shot truck out of it, but I need to lengthen the wheelbase to do it right. I am going to end up making it a flatbed with some unique features. The frame is dropped in the middle and after the rear axle. Bev gets looks every where I go.

Thanks nine4gmc, I am using the thread to keep myself honest and somewhat accountable. I should have some decent updates today. Things are slowly shaping up.

Space is not always a good thing, I tend to fill whatever space I have and that is a bad thing for me.

Do you ever get the feeling that you are just a stock handler......and will never get to do projects again?

I'm moving boxes of stuff today, from upstairs to downstairs. Where they go from there, I don't know.

So I got the last of the shelves moved the other day and then realized one leg was bent. I am going to have to try and bend it back together, it was bolted to the wall before, but now it will be on its own.

I am finally getting my small bench setup in the stockroom. It will be multipurpose as most things in my shop are. I want to be able to use it for my RC hobby, electronics, as well as ebay shipping and packing. It has an electric motor so it is adjustable height, pretty cool for a $50 bench. It also tilts kind of like a drafting table would.

One thing I am noticing now that I have a clear thought process is how much time and effort I have put into storing items I almost never use. Even if I do use them, they are usually so cheap, that it makes no sense to dedicate a nice drawer to them. Here is a good example, and I have many more that have similarly useless stuff.

I've got a similar problem. When I need space in my bolt bin system I pull two or three drawers full of the stuff and put them in the cheap plastic organizers that you get from HF for cotter pins and stuff like that. Then I can throw them in a stack and decide what I really want to do with them. Things like wood screws go out to the bolt bin in the woodshop. I keep a few in the garage in a smaller container to reduce trips back and forth.

I am going to have to do a lot of that. I may end up sending some of it to auction, it usually does well when it is in some type of container system. I am always upgrading things and selling older ones.

I figure at least I am acknowledging it instead of just ignoring it like I have been, that has to be the first step.

Today, I have been so unmotivated, it even has me stumped. I got a late start, then I was so tired I ended up sleeping on my recliner for a few hours. I guess I was tired.

I am just now getting my start, I plan on working late. I just feel like I am in a pit of despair. I have spent a few weeks cleaning, yet now the shop feels worse than it has in a long time.

I am still arguing with myself over placement of a bunch of items, I can't even figure out who is winning.

I feel like I need to do certain things, but I am also thinking I may try and setup my RC Hobby area. At least I could do something that I enjoy when I am done, plus it is working towards the overall goal of organizing. Another good thing is I have stuff that needs to go on ebay and maybe going through all the RC stuff I will find more to sell.

Don't. It's pointless. Accept that some things will end in non-optimal spots, and that you'll never know the right spot until after you've used the shop for a while. Maybe years.

Something I learned a long time ago from a greater man than me: sometimes it's more important to make a decision than to make the right decision. You're allowed to be wrong. But if you are unable to make a decision, you can never move forward. And that's much worse than being wrong.

That is probably one of the most freeing thoughts I have heard in a long time, I may have to use that as my new mantra.

Thanks for the inspiration!

Strouty, you and I are 1... I kept asking my girl if there was anything she needed me to do in the house. She replied, isn't there something you need to do in the shop? To which I replied, there is too many things that need to be done in the shop, I'd feel better doing something she needs me to do in the house...She then replied, lets go to the shop...

Well, that was about 2hrs ago, I just came in for a drink and some dinner then I'll be right back out there until dawn... Same scenario but on a smaller scale, I have to make a bigger mess just to clean up, I've been at the new place for 6 weeks now and still do not have a "working" shop...just one that needs work :( I think I'll have some of your new mantra now, if you don't mind

Thanks M Jess, I heard it before but now I feel it...

I find that if I take lots of pictures so I can actually see my progress it helps a lot. My GF helps me on Tuesdays for about 4 hours, she is a keeper, sounds like yours is too!

I hope anyone that feels like us can learn to use that mantra. Once we get things to the usable state, it will feel pretty damn good.

That is definitely how I feel, I am working towards tossing a bunch of stuff, right now I am into the computer parts and cables. I have almost a full trash can, about 20 pounds of wires and a semi organized box of cables.

For a while I rebuilt computers and gave them to non-profit groups. Then all of those groups started asking for the latest OSs and latest hardware. I couldn't give them away. At that time I decided that it wasn't worth my time to build the old machines. I dumped almost all of them in the trash. I think I still have one or two but most of them are now at the scrappers. It felt good to get my shop back.

I figure I am starting somewhere, even if it isn't a large area, I am going to reclaim something. I am pulling a mostly all nighter and I hope to have some nice results. I will have to take some pictures so I don't miss the transition.

Mbdeck, I am going through some of the organization threads to get motivation. I just found some of your posts, I was actually looking at the picture of your green cabinets. I have some similar, but those are much heavier duty and I like them a lot.

Some days are like that...Hell, some weeks are like that.

What I do, is I keep starting again. I see you are doing the same. Even during a day when I am getting things done, I stop often, and want to quit. So I will take a break, and then get right back in there and do some more.

Keep on keeping on.

I love the GJ, it is always there for a little boost!

Bill, I am 100% sure I am a hoarder, I am just catching it early enough to hopefully curb it. I figure it is an ongoing (probably never ending) battle. I can see that it is an addiction and has takes some serious mental acrobatics to keep from acquiring things like a drunken sailor.

I got my cabinet that holds the majority of the RC parts setup and reloaded. It is a little higher than I would like, but it works. Next I have to figure out what I am doing with some of my open space. I was originally going to cut down some of the shelving that was there, but I decided against that. I figured out how I can make a heavy duty "wall" that I can use to hold tools and store bins on. It is not a rush item, so it may be a while before it gets done.

Nut and bolt storage thread

Yeah, I went and got that cabinet to get it out of someone else's way. I couldn't give it away so I decided that I would use it. I'm glad that I did. It holds about 1/3 of my fasteners. Even empty I can't move it with the drawers in it. I think that I saw a picture of another one like it a week or two ago. I would like another one. ...but I haven't found one close to me. ..and I don't really have room for it.

The stock room looks like it is coming together. Don't forget to put labels on the boxes in the RC cabinet. That way when I "happen" by to get my 80/20 metal I'll know which RC boxes to grab while I am there.

LOL...

another organization idea that sometimes helps is to paint or color the labels the same color for different groups. Maybe make the RC box labels brown and the front of the cabinet brown. Make the SAE fasteners drawers red and the metric green, ....

I mailed the 8020 the other day, you didn't get it yet????

Good idea on labeling. As I have said before, I am terrible at committing, so I will start out with masking tape and a sharpie.

I think I am going to setup a charging and storage area for all the cordless tools on top of the big vidmar. I have never had a dedicated space where I can setup chargers and I would really like to do that.
