My only vehicle is a cucv, but i have a 467 that I just got done building to replace the anemic 6.2 that is in it.

I have a soft spot for 6.2 and 6.5 diesels. I actually have two in the shop right now and three suburbans running 6.5's. Two of those are projects, one is my daily driver right now.

Nice!

Without the turbo it is pretty bad. They are really nice on fuel, well without 37's. I wish I could find those trucks without rust, but around here, they are usually eaten alive. Even mine has some rot on the cab, but as bad as this sounds, I am going to put a civy cab on it. I am working on the air leak now, I had to go on steel soldiers to figure out what I was doing. I shortened the return spring on the throttle, twice and it doesn't seem to help reduce the RPMs. I guess I will be searching about that next.

Well this little shutterstat (that is what the valve is called) is driving me insane. I can't even find a replacement, I am sure there is a similar unit I just need to find it. On SS forum, there are a few people who have ordered a special o-ring from mcmaster, so I may try that. It ticks me off to have the air leak, especially after pulling it apart 4 times total. I may take it off tonight and go to the local truck parts dealer and see if they have something, my guess is it will be expensive!

I took it apart again and tried another size o-ring, no luck. I can't seem to find the exact one I am looking for and even with google, it seems like a needle in a haystack. Hopefully I can find something that will work. Last option would be to make the fan manual, but I am not really interested in that.

I am not sure cork would work, I could look at faucet o-rings. This is almost like a piston, too tight and it won't work, too loose and it mount work.

The o-ring is thick and appears to be almost squared off, this could be from wear, but I do not know for sure. I found another unit that is identical except it is designed to work at 190 degrees instead of 200 degrees. I figure I can swap parts from the other one to make mine work. Basically this is a thermally (coolant) controlled air switch to run my clutch fan. They are called shutterstats as far as I can tell. I may have to post up the info in the diesel projects thread.

Of course I did not bring the old one home. I think I have found a close replacement, so if the washer doesn't work, I am going to try that.

I talked with the manufacturer about getting the right o-rings. They are sending out a couple of kits. $22 each, but I know they are the right parts. I figure I can rebuild mine and try and match the o-rings from the kit. It pained me to do this, but I had to put it back together so I could move the truck from the doorway. I hate doing things over and over.

Today I was supposed to ship out the big grinder I bought, but the trucker got stuck at his last stop, I guess they needed a crane to unload him. Now I have to get up earlier than I want to so I can be there first thing in the morning. I will be happy when it is loaded and headed to Michigan.

I am working on getting the big vidmar cabinet cleaned out, it is being swapped for another taller one. My buddy Steve is supposed to come over tomorrow afternoon to help me load it. I have moved it too many times!

The vidmar is all cleaned out and ready to be loaded. I laid all the drawers up against the lockers, I am so glad the lockers are up against the wall otherwise it would have tipped over.

Today I got the big grinder shipped out, then got the vidmar loaded and ready to go. Since I had help, I also moved the lockers back to where I never thought they would be again. The big grinder had some extra parts with it that the buyer knew nothing about, so I kept them. One thing is a nice little reelcraft air hose reel and the other is a large mist collection filter. Who knows if I can resell that, but I sure will try.

The forklift of my dreams!

Holy ****! That was in your shop!!!!? Looks like I spy a nice iron worker in the background.

Ironworker, yes, but the grinder was in a much bigger shop. I bought it and resold it, then arranged for shipping. The company I bought it from loaded it, I just turn a profit with minimal handling! This is the second one I sold, it weighed 16k pounds. The last one I had to pick up and deal with a rigger, that took another $750 plus a lot of effort. So this time I was able to save all that cash. Anything under 25k pounds they come directly to me and I have bought (and sold!) every machine except my big drill press.

Round and round it goes. I think you moved that vidmar 5 times. The lockers I thought were long gone. Same **** with me. I needed the table saw today after all, so two hours spent cleaning things up. I was able to get a working space for the saw, so I guess that's progress.

Yeah, the lockers are not exactly what I want, but I think if I build some shelves for them, they will work fairly well. They are the only two that I kept and they were in almost perfect condition. I have been using them to store furniture blankets and work clothes. At least I scrapped all the other ones!

The vidmar will never be moved by me again, it is now in Bellingham, MA. I did get another one, but I do not think I will be moving it for a while. Although I was toying with the idea of putting it on casters. I think if you pay attention to the cycles, each revolution gets less and less cluttered, it is when you ignore the facts and continue on that things tend to spiral out of control.

I drove to Massachusetts today to swap the vidmar for another vidmar. Squashfest81 had bought a taller one and liked the idea of mine, because it was shorter, I also bought a few cabinets from him. It took a bit of work, but longterm the new cabinet, we are affectionately calling it the "green monster" will hold bulkier items that the old one would not.

Yup, I even feel comfortable without the steel toe boots. I am taking a day off from the shop, going to try and get a few things done at the house.

I was pretty depressed about the amount of time I spend moving the same things around all the time and kinda took it out on you. I will restate what I said earlier this year, you are less cluttered and have more working room than I do ( since you got that giant boat outside anyway!)

Don't worry, it wasn't taken badly.

I spent the afternoon at two of my favorite stores, one is a pawn shop that specializes in tools only, the other is an electronics surplus store. I set a budget before leaving and I left under budget. I think I got some great deals on a couple things I needed, then I bought some casters for a couple of projects that I hope to do over the next week. I will post some pictures of that stuff tomorrow.

My catalog racks came in the other day, I was not sure if they were going to do what I wanted, but I figured I would give them a shot. I was pleasantly surprised, because they work better than expected. Now I need more of them!

A couple of my new to me air riveter/hammers came in, they are very nice. The trigger allows for a gentle tap all the way to beat the **** out of the steel. I am going to pick up a bigger one, but I am waiting until the compressor is actually pumping air before I do that. I also picked up my pliers that arrived from Japan.

I got all my stuff unloaded from my trip yesterday, wish I had been able to take more time at the pawn shop. I still feel good, I stuck to my budget, so I can't complain. I got an old oscilliscope cart that I am going to use for my plasma cutter and the miller 211, it is not perfect, but it will work until I can make something better. At $15, there is no way I could make it for that, but I may end up reworking it, just not sure yet.

I actually started messing with it yesterday, it will work well for sure. I have to figure out what I am doing for hooks to hold the cables.

I went out to move the 6x6 and I guess I left the power on because the batteries were dead (and the switch was on!). That is the first time I have ever done that, I put the float charger on it, but it may need the real charger so I will find out when I get to the shop.

I bought 12 of these casters, they were $29.00 per set, I thought that was a decent price considering they are albion and brand new. I think they are rated at 300 pounds each, so 1200 pounds for a set.

You can see my old cart for the welder, it looks cool, but it really *****. It was pretty stable, but it did not roll well unless going straight. The new cart is going to have some issues as well, I am pretty sure I will not be able to open the side panel to change my wire without taking the machine off the cart. Anyways, here is what I did yesterday. I got to use one of my new air hammers to remove the rivets, all I can say is awesome!

I did also take all the lab cabinets that I picked up on saturday out in front of the wood shop trailer. Hopefully those can get at least put into the trailer today.

Looks like we're going to have a good day. Sunshine always makes it easier to get things done.
I'm starting the process to get the old lift moved. We ripped down the ceiling (some of it) yesterday. Hard to juggle work and construction at the same time.

Will it ever end?

That's what I am starting to ask myself.

Each machine acquired demands tooling and supplies and accessories and storage.

Then it suggests an additional machine for more capabilities and on and on it goes.

Looking at your progression, it seems never to end.

Should I even embark on this journey?

I am buying machinery with no specific project in mind, just capabilities.

Most of my machines were acquired for capabilities. Mill, lathe, disk sander, drill presses, bench grinders/buffers, horizontal bandsaw, welder, plasma cutter.

But sometimes it works the other way. I want to make metal guards for the lights on my utility trailer, so they don't get damaged when I move them around. So that will require some machinery for cutting and bending sheet metal. Shear and brake and fixtures for my arbor press.

And like you, that means working on the whole property, to accommodate the machinery.

Sometimes I wonder if it is worth it. Most people live happy and productive lives without ever being able to bend, cut, shape or drill metal...

But I feel DRIVEN to have these abilities

How about you?

Bill, this is kind of funny because I was just thinking almost the exact same thing as I drove home last night.

I buy all of this "stuff" so that I am capable of doing things, except I don't know how to use some of the "stuff" that I buy. I am thinking that in some instances, my shop is like a bookcase and I am just filling it with books to make me look smarter.

I know that is not 100% true, but I need to pace myself so that when something new comes in, I can get it into use before moving on to the next shiny thing.

The flip side, is that when you have just the right thing when you need it, the feeling is so great. You just go grab the tool (Which is right where it should be), and solve the problem.

And a new tool, with new capabilities, is just a wonderful thing.

I just picked up the house brand 3 piece electricians tool set at HD, that was on markdown. $17.

It has a small tool for sensing voltage in a line. I didn't know a thing like that existed. It's great!

Guess I'll have to keep adding tool and machinery capabilities, until my physical and mental abilities deteriorate so much that I can't even use them.

That will be a horrible day.

It is a pretty good feeling when you get to use something that you got as a good deal. Sometimes I think I try and create situations that require those things, just so I can get that feeling. I guess it is a "high" of sorts. I am working on the welding cart remake. I hope to have it usable today. I just need to shuffle some stuff since it is made of aluminum, my spool gun is kind of buried at the moment.

I almost forgot, the float charger has the batteries in the 6x6 just about charged enough to start it. I have been pleased with it so far, next I would like to try it on my forklift.

If you get really good at it, you can make something you don't need, which will require tools you don't have, to manufacture it.

I'm doing that with a Moxon double screw bench top vise. I don't really need one, as I don't have a woodworking bench yet. But I ordered the metal materials for it anyway. That included an ACME threaded rod and 2 hand wheels which need holes bored and threaded. This means I need a properly sized bit and a rough and finish ACME tap. It also means setting up my saw.

Lots of fun!

Sometimes I do that to light a fire under my ***, other times it just trips me up. As an example, I have two suburbans that need motor replacements and I am getting the parts together in my "spare time". Well about a year and a half ago I bought a kit to replace the oil coiler lines, now I can't find the kit anywhere and I thought I had kept everything together. I don't want to spend another $175 and then find the one that is missing. If I don't find it soon, I will be forced to order another one, the only saving grace is if I find the original one, I can use it on another one of the trucks.
