I spent time cleaning the shop so I will have room to get the welder setup, so I can finish the welding cart for the other welder. I also got the 6x6 started, I did have to setup the large charger to get it going, the float charger just would not do it. I took the shutterstat out (again) and put it back together with the new o-rings, it does not leak now! Of course I am not 100% sure I put the o-rings in the right place, I am going to call the manufacturer tomorrow to see what they say. I want the repair to last.

Once again, non-productivity has set in. The day is almost over and I just got to the shop. I have about 6 hours of newly added "to do" list items and I only want to be here for about 2 hours. I will try and get the most important items done and then get the rest of the stuff done next week.

It ticks me off that I can't get things done, but I have to remember that none of this is really important right now. I need to remember that if I can still get the important things done, then I am doing OK.

Tell me about it. As I get older I lower my expectations for what I can accomplish on the weekend in the shop and I still never meet them. I now try to tenaciously stick to the one project ( with the usual breakdowns and personal things that get in the way ). Today I burned through my first bucket mudding the walls of the woodworking area. Such a long way to go yet but sticking to it.

In the last week I feel as though I've gone hundreds of miles, but only a foot or two in thousands of directions. This **** has to stop.

I am listening to another audio book and it is discussing how you should always "protect the asset", what they mean is to protect yourself, because you only have one life. I know my health is bad, at least for someone not even forty. I also know there are people in much worse positions than me, but I need to take care of myself. That was what my original plan for this year was. I was supposed to get my physical and mental house in order. I fear I will be dead by 50 if I keep up this crazy charade I call life. :shocking:

I am so tired of multitasking, multiple priorities, the media, and those damn Jonses!

I think I am going to just take a break from it all, my pace is going to be set by my abilities, as those grow it will increase in speed. I am also planning on saying "no" more often when asked if I can do something that I really don't have the time to do. I need to be the ******* for a change.

I don't need an audiobook to know that getting involved in doing one thing with no distractions will accomplish everything you want. Put the phone down and just do a project. The 5 hours I spent mudding today exercised my body, kept me from snacking and gave me a mental timeout from everything else. Just me and the radio, the way I like it. It's a good soreness of getting something done at the end of the day.

At 71 I sure wish I had taken better care of myself.

What I have found is that you start with 1 good-for-you "resolution", let's say beginning each day with 5 minutes of stretching (to start). Before you know it, you actually begin to feel better, and then perhaps introduce a 10-minute bike ride. Then one day you find yourself in the supermarket choosing mostly healthy food and looking forward to preparing, serving and consuming it. Each good thing you do for yourself brings its own reward and, with that, draws you up to new heights.

Thanks for the input, I think starting small is a great thing. I am also going to try and look at only one aspect, then move to another once I figure things out. I know I am just confusing myself by having so many different projects and aspects of my life.

Definitely start small and master that first thing. Remember you feel bad and frustrated in the shop and life in general because of too many irons in the fire. You can't apply the same old strategy to getting healthy. Start small as has been suggested. Do the 5-10 minutes a day of exercise for enough time to make it habit and to then see you can succeed. Then add that test piece whether another exercise or changing a food habit. Take small steps in changing your lifestyle and be successful at those which will only encourage you to continue. Best of luck and remember you are not alone in this. Most all of us get ourselves overloaded at times and need some simplification in life. You can do it!

Thanks for the kind words guys, it helps to know you are not alone.

I will say that today is another good example of no good deed goes unpunished. I went to the MIL's house today and helped get her convertible out of storage. It always has a dead battery, well I jumped it and let it run for a while with the high beams on. That was not enough, so I took it for a ride, I get back, turn it off and everything is fine. An hour later, we jump in the truck and leave. I get going down the road and then my hood flies up. Yup, in all my effort I forgot to shut my hood and I never noticed it afterwards. It bent it good, broke the hinges. I had to make it worse to get it closed. I can't wait to see if it will open on its own. Gotta love Mother's Day!

Yeah, this weekend is has been a car damage fest. My GF had the front of her car damaged at the gas station friday night as well. The only good thing about my damage is I was planning on turning one of the other suburbans into a parts truck, I guess this seals the deal. :willy_nil

I did almost nothing to, in, or at the shop this week.

Today I spent some time with the GF's car, I removed the entire front bumper cover and reattached it after making some adjustments. It looks almost like it did before the accident, except for a few scratches and some paint from the other car. I still need to get her a few clips that volvo sells, so the grill will stay where it is supposed to, but she was very pleased. I think it is passable even to her, that means she will get a check for the damage without having to pay a body shop to do anything.

I worked on a couple more projects for her and now I am ready to head home. I did find out that the old bed posts she wanted made into garden art have been brazed and trying to weld around it was a real PITA. Luckily it is on the bottom and it will never be seen, so as long as it holds together we are good.

Here are the pictures of the flower planter, not sure how it will evolve. I have some more light housings to play with and I was thinking about adding another large layer of "petals" to the middle. I also wanted to try and make the top look more like a flower but without any points. It was kind of neat, because the aluminum must have been annealed by the heat as the tips of the petals were very pliable, almost like lead.

I will have to sand them down for sure, but I think they will be neat after getting some paint on them. Here are the bedposts I welded some solid rod to, so they would stand up without any supports, just stick them into the ground.

I should copy your design. If the height didn't prevent the neighborhood dogs from peeing on my bushes the death star errr, I mean flower petals would be a deterrent! :D
Just kidding though. Very creative use of otherwise scrap metal.

I will definitely be adding some more to it. Once I get the spool gun out, I figure then I can tack things on and see if I like them. I will post more pictures when I get to working on it.

So I was at the shop this morning, now I am doing errands and I will be back to the shop for the afternoon and most of the evening. I am not sure what I am going to do, but I know it will involve cleaning!

Don't. It's pointless. Accept that some things will end in non-optimal spots, and that you'll never know the right spot until after you've used the shop for a while. Maybe years.

Something I learned a long time ago from a greater man than me: sometimes it's more important to make a decision than to make the right decision. You're allowed to be wrong. But if you are unable to make a decision, you can never move forward. And that's much worse than being wrong.

That was a VERY smart man.
One thing I will add, from a very great man in my life.
" I may not be right, but I am never wrong."
Oh! He made decisions that....weren't right....and admitted and accepted that openly.
But it let him make decisions, some, very difficult.
It worked for him in spades. Started with dirt floors, little education, no family, no prospects.
Ended prosperous, content, his whole family productive, set for generations.
Loved and respected by family, friends and business associates.
Make that decision, then make it again if you have to, BUT MAKE IT.

I am slowly starting to get that attitude, I definitely think it is learned. I also would say that I am also learning to say no to people. I have always done things that I never wanted to do, because I feel like I was supposed to or the person asking would not be happy with me. In the end it only hurt me more and it would have been better to just say no. A prime example of this is the boat that was in my shop all winter, taking all my space. Now I am happy to say that I am able to do some things for me. I still have to say yes, but now things are more on my terms. This will also be a learning curve, but so far things are looking good.

Just think how lucky you are to have space enough to store a boat. I can barely get my Harley in and out because of the machines overcrowding the shop.

I guess I could look at it that way, but in reality it ended up being a "free" hardship. I could not use the shop this past winter. Had I said no to the boat maybe this winter would have been different, but that is hindsight and I am moving forward.

That winter storage had to be of some value. Why didn't you charge for it? They would have had to pay someone else, no? But if it's a favor for a friend, that's one thing. Still, I would never block access to my shop as I use it every day.

The boat is mine, it was given to me for helping swap a motor and going to cape cod to pick it up. I just needed a boat like a hole in the water.

Ah, well I have my own boat project, stored under a tarp on its trailer next to my shop, a 22' I/O cuddy cabin, for fishing.

At least you can use a boat more than me, we only get 3 months of summer and that is only if we are good the rest of the year.

Grew up in Rhode Island. And have fished Sebago Lake. The New England winters pushed me to California. But I sure miss the clam cakes, crab cakes, fried clams, lobster and real chowder. A couple weeks ago I ordered clam chowder (Manhattan, she said) at a local restaurant. I left after a couple bites of what most certainly was tomato soup with a LOT of onions and a tiny bit of ground clams--nothing else!

Strouty,
This is one of my favorite threads on GJ. I don't get over here often enough.

One thing I notice, and I share this propensity, is that you are going in lots of different directions all the time. Part of that, is you are interested in lots of things. Me too.

Another is that you like to help people. Me too.

But when your own house is out of order, you owe it to yourself, AND everyone else, to just say NO! In fact, NO should be the standard answer unless there is an extreme reason for it not to be.

It's not selfish. It's reasonable.

When I was VP of my neighborhood group, and helping people out left and right, without them even asking, I was neglecting myself.

I used to clean all the tree dreck out of the street gutters for the whole block up the street from me. No one did their own or even thanked me. This spring one neighbor asked when I was going to do it in front of their house.......like it was expected.

I realized too, that no one would do any such thing for me.

There is enough of my own to do.

So I cleared the decks, quit my post, quit going to the meetings and quit helping neighbors unless it was a barter situation for something I needed.

The world didn't end. People still wave at me.

I still haven't dealt with the problem of being interested in too many things. I am getting better at dealing with priorities first, but that is a struggle. It is so easy to sidetrack myself. More fun to eat my desert before my vegetables.

Thanks Bill, I appreciate the words. I am in a learning phase and it is almost painful to change how I do things. The next step is to start really understand that holding on to things because of perceived value or because I paid so much, is what is really dragging me down. I am ready to get on with things. In the last couple of weeks I have really lowered my expectations (in a good way) on what I can get done and that has made things more fun when I am at the shop.

When I went through my first mid-life crisis, I figured I needed to unload **** until all I owned could be carried on my back. Came pretty close to that. But I really have many interests. And want to always be challenging myself in every way possible. Learning to run my vertical mill, lathe, tig welder, ...

I don't think I would be happy with just what I could carry, but I do want to simplify things. I am pretty sure I have said this before, but I feel like I have surrounded myself with stuff, to make me feel smarter or more capable. That is where I failed myself, all I have done is made my life confusing. So I am trying to take my life back, except I don't really know what that life is like.
