Good to see you back posting Stro Bro! I got your message today, sorry I did not reply at the time, I was hanging Hardie Plank on the front of the house today and did not have my phone on me. All that ice trips me out, it was mid 70*s here today. Are those the HF vehicle dollies?

Glad you opened this thread back up Stro Bro. You need to make a trip up this way soon. Or maybe I need to make a trip down to your place.:dunno:

Nines, the dollies I have are made in the USA by Merrick, that being said, they kind of **** unless you have multiple people. Even then they are hard to get started, if you use a jack to set the dolly wheels in the direction you want to go it is much easier. If you have to change directions, it is a bear. They are rated at 2500 pounds each and the burbs weigh about 8000 pounds, but even the one with no motor was a bear to push alone. I want to make some of my own with larger casters that have better swivels.

Dan, maybe it is your turn? :)

Here is a link to the dolly manufacturer for anyone interested. If you have a car or something under 4000 pounds, they would do very well, but anything bigger is a bit of a pain. They offer these crazy versions with 8000 pound capacity, but they just add more wheels and I think that would be a problem since you would have to get all of them going the same direction before it would push easily.

Have you caught up enough to know I'm planning a road trip to Florida sometime in the next few months? Maybe you'd like to be part of it? I can't say that I'll devote anytime to searching for Tampa though.

Have to get my *** back in gear, road trip sounds fun, but probably not the best idea right now. I am sure Tampa will find you if you just don't change your underwear for a week or so.

I had three diesel suburbans in there!

Congrats. This means you officially have a shop.

Seriously, everything else is now details and personal preferences. When this thread started, you had to put Idontknowhowmuch stuff outside just to work in one bay, then haul it all back inside.
Sure, the disaster is now outside in extra storage containers, but that was the general idea in the first place.

It has all started again, I remember why I hate my shop so much.

Yesterday I brought the car in, ordered some parts, today the parts came in, replaced the parts, problem not solved. Now I have to do the same thing again, my truck is inside, covered in snow, the floor will be wet, I spent time and effort for no real reason. Tomorrow the floor will be all wet.

I am feeling a bit anxious about the thread, well about the forum, or even the internet in general. I have spent way too much time searching, reading, looking, and lurking. It is so much easier to get lost in someone else's problems or wandering around their awesome shop (or shed), I need to concentrate on me for a while. I am thinking about taking a hiatus of sorts, I feel the internet and computers in general are dragging me down and making me almost non productive. When I have been on the job site, things are getting done, but as soon as I hit the shop, nothing really gets done, there is always a reason or excuse to check the news, check the email, check the forums. I may try cutting the cord completely, I can still use my phone to get internet if needed, but I would like to rely less and less on it. I tend to spend more money and waste more time when I have access to the internet. I would prefer concentrating on projects and getting things done.

I wondered what had happened when the tone of this thread changed, recently. I think time away is good. Sure folks like to follow along with life but, as you know, that's really only one tiny portion of life. The fellas you have posting up and have made friends with, these guys can text you and keep up with how you are. We can live outside this forum, haha.

Earlier this past year I stopped looking at Facebook. I like keeping up with family, college friends, and people I used to hang around with back east. But this past year I started to really think some of these folks were off their rockers the way they were posting about politics and such. So, I had my wife make a new password, I deleted the app from my phone and iPad and got on with life.

It was absolutely refreshing and since I've logged back on (I had to because we used it to organize a party) I look things up maybe every ten days or two weeks. I've missed out on news of engagements, a divorce, a couple pregnancies, and a death (not of the FB friend but of their relative) but it was all from people I don't even have the phone numbers of.

Anyway... remember the title of your thread and what it was like in the beginning. As well, consider that there's something going on - completely unrelated - that's showing up as a stressor with this stuff.

I wish you all the best not just in 2017 but in general. I'm rooting for you!

Brent

Sometimes my own thoughts get lost in the sea that is life, thanks for the recap Brent. Had you not quoted that, I would have almost forgot I typed it, sounds silly, but I am telling the truth. I think I need to put together some of my thoughts and quotes and print them out so I can read them anytime I get off track.

We got 8 inches at the house. Not sure what the shop got. I have to wait for our new snowblower to be delivered at the house. Then I can not shovel!

May not be to the shop until Saturday as I have a doc appointment this afternoon and the plow has no alternator so I can't plow after dark.

The truck came from an auction in Massachusetts, but the title was from Illinois, so who knows where it came from!

EDIT: I had a brain fart. The truck came from a private sale in New Hampshire, and they bought it from an auction in New York, but the title was definitely not from New York. The name you PMed me with sounds familiar. Now I will have to investigate more.

Strouty,

I don't know about you, but I have a love hate relationship with my tools.

I love having tools, as they give me capabilities.

But along with that comes the demand that I use them to solve problems. And at least for automotive repair, I really don't like doing it. Now, I'm still working curbside, but even in an inside space with a lift, I still wouldn't like doing auto maintenance and repair.

Mostly it's the difference between jobs I have to do, as opposed to ones I choose to do. But it's also repair and maintenance as opposed to designing and making things, which is something I love to do.

So my advice is to find a use for the shop, or a job in the shop that you like doing, and do that after each job you don't like. Use it like dessert after eating your peas and carrots.

Good point Bill, having to do something is not the same a wanting to do something.

As an example, when I have to pay my bills it *****, but when I want to buy something it is fun.

Bad example for us, but I had to say it!

I am headed to the shop today, yesterday there was no power and about 12" of snow. If I had been there earlier I was going to plow, but with the bad alternator using the headlights is a no go.

Strouty, not to get you started down another rabbit hole, but I watch a guy on youtube that lives a couple hours from me and he is building a 75ft boat in his front yard, in Tulsa, anyway, he is inspirational for me. I bring him up because one of the things he does and recommends is to put quotes up all around his home, shop, boat etc that help him stay on track with what he wants to do in life. I saw an interview of him by another channel that mentioned the same thing, they had interviewed quite a few people that did things out of the norm and one of the things most of them did was to have quotes around them, whether sayings, direct quoted, scriptures, lyrics etc.

I think it would be a good idea to write a few things on the walls, floors wherever it is handy, you can even just use chalk or put it on paper and tape it to the doors, doesn't have to be fancy or permanent.

I also think it is good to have help, not just physical help, but mental support as well, I think that is why I spend time over on practical machinist, I run my shop by myself and it seems to be good to get on there and be able to help others and get help with things from people going through similar situations. The problem then becomes keeping it balanced, not spending too much time on forums even though the intention was/is good.

It may not be a bad idea to plan a get together with people to come to the shop and hangout, help, whatever. This could be motivating and also helpful for new ideas and like a barn raising it could get some larger projects done pretty fast and that alone is pretty motivating and exciting.

Thanks for having the guts to put your shop struggles and such on here,

Jason

I find Doug on SV Seeker a great motivator as well, I liked in his interview he said for new viewers to not watch all his videos but to watch just enough to get excited and then get out and work on / build something.

The best part of SV Seeker to me is that he admits that in a lot of cases he has no idea on how to properly do the job at hand but takes it on anyway and learns how by doing.

strouty, your shop still looks great compared to when this thread started. Just go back and look at all the progress that you have made. yes maybe you have slipped a little bit back wards but you are miles ahead of where you were when you started.
Now I will get off my soap box. Rich

Thanks guys, will have to take a peek at the stuff you were talking about when I get a chance. I got to removing all the snow, well almost all of it, I still have to clear in front of the storage boxes and the far side of the shop, but I got the major parts done. There was a lot of heavy snow, it didn't help that it was pure ice underneath it. I think I may put the tire chains on the plow sometime next year.

I spent a few minutes, yes it only took a few minutes, moving the suburbans around so I could get the tool boxes out. Not sure why I didn't do it last week, but I guess I was in one of those funks where everything seems too tough to do. The weather is nice outside, so I am going to move some stuff from inside to the back storage, this should make some much needed room. Then I have decisions to make, serious ones, decisions that should have been made years ago, but I have been putting them off. Hope you everyone else is having a great day too.

Then I got ambitious and decided to change the orientation of the suburbans, I am in the middle of it and with one person, it is really not easy. The wheel dollies work great once all the wheels are swiveled into position, but it takes a lot of effort to get the thing moving. I have been using my floor jack to take the weight off and manually change the direction of the wheels. I think one of my future projects will be wheel dollies that actually move a larger vehicle easily with one person.

remember, the stuff is only of value when it is usable.....

I recently sold my JD 112 hydraulic lift lawn tractor.... it was taking up space and it required more of my time every time I wanted to use it, which was rare.... I admit, I liked the tractor, I had spent a lot of time looking for it, it was hard to let it go, but it was time for it to go..... At this point, I'm glad it's gone and the space is nice to have back.....

Keep your head up on your adventures and focus on being able to enjoy your time in your shop.
