Could I just ask T-Mac what it turned out to be in the end as I'm currently having a similar problem and what you said about them souding like they were carrying something and dropped it really got my attention as I hearing that noise too! I'm praying it's not rats as we've had them previously in the walls n floors and it took nearly 2 months to get rid of them properly! It definitely doesn't sounds the same but they never were in the attic last time so don't really know wat they would sound like

I think I just ended a 6 month ordeal with Black or also known as Roof Rats, in the second floor attic. They or rather probably one pregno female entered from an ornamental tree about six months ago. The tree is gone now and after catching nineteen adolescent and one large adult (the last one). I have had no other activity on the traps for a month now. They are able to get off of the large rat glue traps and the older wood type rat traps are useless. I found this type made by Victor to the best with an almost 100% success rate. You can also dispose of and reset these easier. The rats never made a scratching noise so rats might not your issue. I have also had gray squirrels & chipmunks in the attic in the past and they are both quite a bit noisier than the rats.

Same experience in Alabama with roof rats. Also found in Arizona, although I have not heard of these in Penna where the OP is located.

i had a mouse in my attic & the scratching would wake me up at night. it was louder than you'd expect from a small mouse, but it would burrow in the insulation & find a warm spot on the drywall. i used live traps with success (w/ some peanut butter inside).

i would think a squirrel would be noisy all the time, whereas mice are nocturnal & are more active at night?

The D-Con gives them the trots and they dehydrate themselves and die. Usually no smell to speak of as they are all dried up.
