I had ordered a never flat tire for one of my aging Jackson wheelbarrows that I use to get firewood into the cellar for the wood stove.
In preparation, I used a wire wheel on a die grinder to clean off the old concrete & rust from the carriage bolts that hold the wheel on, & thought I should tighten everything else up while I was in the middle of it. I hit it with penetrate & remembered that this thing is put together with all square nuts.
Cool,... years ago I came home with a set of Matco 1/2 drive chrome square drive sockets that had a missing piece, but fortunately I had the the 9/16 that I needed.
The job went fine with a few challenges (had to use a cut off wheel to make a flathead out of the carriage bolts & use a hand impact to loosen them up.
On a whim, I thought I'd check eBay to see If I could find the missing socket I needed to fill the hole on the rail.
Son of a gun, there it was, correct size, style, & part number.
I've been off & on trying to find this guy for years.
Happy New Year to me. :)

Now, could someone explain to me the design of these sockets.
They are not true double square since the second set of points fit a smaller sized square nut. Correct?

^ that was Wright Tool Company's "10-point" idea.

Great idea, but it didn't SELL. Sets pop up on ebay now and then in pristine condition - very odd.
I think it was one of those "It looks weird, so I'm not going to buy/use it." (e.g., Edsel)

:dunno:

They were sold under the Powrkraft name as well, of course still made by Wright.

Thanks for sharing those. I have a mostly complete set of Craftsman double square that belonged to my grandfather. They are rarely used but I too occasionally look for the remaining pieces.

What's funny is that someone mentioned the "ten point" sockets from Wright not too long ago here. IIRC they were dismantling an old building that was half hex and half square bolts/nuts and this allowed them to have one tool. I have a few of the 10 point sockets marked Klein, but they're in small sizes (7/16 and smaller) so it's not very noticeable. I never thought about what the purpose was, but just figured it was something about the tooling or manufacturing process and those extra four corners didn't serve a purpose. Note that these are not the same as a typical 8 point/double square.

I had an old Hinsdale 1/2 socket set with ratchets, extensions and about 3 dozen sockets that was probably my Grandfather's. After moving it to 3 different houses I sold it to someone who collected Hinsdale...but not before pulling out all the square drive and odd size hex sockets (center of drawer). I use them maybe once a year but great to have the right tool when it comes up.
