Sometimes I feel like tools are addicting.

In particular USA made chrome tools. Lest face it, a good deal is VERY hard to pass up even if it is not technically needed.

Then I think about other addictions that cost a bit of money and leave you with nothing to show for it...ie...video poker, traveling, hookers, strippers, smoking, booze, food....etc.

Tools on the other hand leave you with something that will stay with you. You have something to show for the money you spent. And unless you pay highway robbery prices, the tool can be sold for what you spent or close to it. And they are incredibly useful saving you time and money down the road or perhaps right away.

So, it's not such a bad addiction, is it? It could be MUCH worse.

I started watching videos of tool restorations and then one day I saw a rusty crescent wrench for $1 at the flea market. I bought it, soaked it in Evaporust, etc, etc etc, and got my $1 worth of fun out of it. That was a few years ago. I now have a drawer with about 40 restored USA made adjustable wrenches.

I know what you mean.

I like tools owning and using tools. As a thing to spend money on it isn't too bad really.

Imagine spending $10k on a remote control airplane and crashing it first time out?

One can buy a lot of 12v, 18v, 20v and flex volt power tools as well as lots of wrenches, sockets, pliers and screwdrivers for that kind of money.

I agree that there are worse things to be addicted to. I don't need three Gerstners, nor do I need a Snap On toolbox full of Snap On tools (to your point of USA made chrome tools OP). But I like them. I have tools that I "may have needed and may need some day in the future" (Snap On drum brake tool set) but can't bring myself to get rid of. On my last my last move and I realized that my metric T-handled hex wrenches disappeared and reordered them from Snap On and was disappointed that now my set no longer matches and considered rebuying SI and Torx just so that they matched. I had to regroup and reconsider.

When it boils down to it, I really get great personal satisfaction when something needs to be fixed and I have everything I need in the garage, and I enjoy the smile when the tool displays "Made in the USA" while I'm fixing whatever needs fixing. And I doubly enjoy the smile when I see the reflection in the chrome of the tool.

"Sometimes"? Is that what you tell yourself to make you feel better? Well whatever you have do to make you believe the lies.

99.99999% of us are here because of a problem, aka addiction as those fools who do not understand would call it.

For me, I know I have a problem so if I know about it, it's not a problem. See, problem solved but there wasn't one to begin with, see.

@impactims

Let's be honest, if you DON'T have a tool addiction GJ might not be the place for you.

This place is filled with pushers, er. ah, "contributors", who will always point you to the latest and greatest tool deal. :thumbup:

**** that chrome goodness is in my blood, I just about killed some young buck reaching for a wrench that I wanted and I just about ran him over for it. Do they have an AA group for tool hoarders? I need to join it asap.:rolleyes::rolleyes::eek:

I think of it this way: I could be spending money on a lot worse things. I'm not a drinker, gambler, smoker, sports fanatic, etc. The little bit that I spend on tools these days is hardly anything. It's not keeping food from our table. At worse case after I'm gone, someone sells it for scrap.
