I was doing PM on the welder yesterday, and while I was at WalMart getting a couple quarts of Castrol I remembered I couldn't find my funnel last time, so I decided to pick one up while I was there. I found this orange long funnel that would work perfectly for 97 cents - figuring that surely all inexpensive stuff like that is all made in China, but hell, I'll never find a US-made funnel. Got it home and while I was changing the oil I noticed this... surprise!

I've noticed that a lot at Wal Mart. The cheap stuff that I'm sure is imported is made here in the U.S. and more expensive durable goods are the cheapest thing they can get from China.

There are some USA made surprises even at Walmart. I found a 100' 12 GA extension cord at Walmart for less than $50. I'd call that a deal.

I have that same exact funnel from Wal Mart, always look for the Made in USA stuff.

I'm glad to see they actually stock Made in the USA stuff. I for one refuse to shop at Walmart, but its nice to hear about it none the less.

I found a scraper at walmart that was their brand even and it was made in USA not sure about the blades though.

No, its got 3 pour spouts and a lid though. And I love mine too, great for measuring additives, or anything else I don't want to approximate.

Funnel made by Hoppy. Those are the folks that make the trailer light adapter kits for various vehicles, unplug a connector in the harness and insert the Hoppy T connector and re connect and you have trailer light connections.

Things that can still be made in the USA and remain competitive are those items that have minimum human labor involved, which includes a fair bit of plastics, I believe. Your socks were probably made in the U.S. because making them uses the same machine here as it does in China with only a few cents of labor to sew the toe closed.

Made in America does not imply ypur employing Americans. I'll bet the first hand to touch the funnel was the Walmart employee putting it on the shelf. It is possible that someone packed it at the factory but its an unskilled guy making minimum wage. Since Americans are to good to work for min wage it was probably an immigrant of questionable legal status.

The factory (in America) that makes it HAS to employ some Americans--in management at least if not directly in production. The parent company isn't bringing foreigners over here to manage a factory in NC making socks using illegal aliens.

Unless the raw materials magically appeared from the sky, and were magically transported to the factory, which magically appeared in Kansas, and was processed on injection molding machinery that magically came to exist and found its way into the factory, after which the product was magically warehoused, distributed, and transported to retailers, then I'm not sure your hypothesis holds any water.

Indeed, the US is the world's largest producer (and consumer) of ethylene and polyethylene. The plastic in that funnel was probably made in a Gulf Coast plant.

Oh, stuff is still slipping away at a sad rate. Most of those idled knitting machines were probably purchased by Chinese and shipped there.

Sometimes it is to save literally one cent on a pair of socks. Loss of a job, loss of a factory, of a town, can happen to save a penny on a pair of socks...

My point was that there are still some made in the USA items that require little labor and so can remain competitive.

If you are willing to spend the time, there are a few "Made In the USA" items still at WalMart. Not many, but some.

What scares me is the personal care products that are made in China, as if they have any concept of sterile handling and manufacturing cleanliness procedure.

i have only been to wal mart 3 times in my life and i wish it was 0 times. i'm glad they have some made in u.s. stuff but thats only because they could save a fraction of a cent per unit for some reason.

sometimes its a hassle or unavoidable but i try to shop at smaller stores even if it costs a bit more. the giant stores are squeezing everybody out

Over the last year I've noticed a good deal of all plastic items such as funnels, cases and tubs found in discount stores were made in the US. Even the foil pans I bought for Thanksgiving were US made.
