I'm looking to replace an older Craftsman chain-drive garage door opener. I had pretty much convinced myself on getting a Chamberlain or Liftmaster belt-drive unit, as I'm looking for something quieter than I have now.

However, in poking around the Web, I came across a brand Sommer which from an engineering perspective, looks kind of interesting. They have one that can be ordered from Home Depot -- http://www.homedepot.com/Doors-Wind...splay?langId=-1&storeId=10051&catalogId=10053.

Does anyone have any first-hand experience with this brand? Thanks.

I don't know what your budget is but, I would look @ the Liftmaster 3800 if you're looking for quiet.
Good Luck

GTO,
Thanks for the reply. My understanding is the Liftmaster 3800 is designed to work with a garage door with torsion springs. Unfortunately, mine has extension springs. But yes, from what I've been able to read, that would be a good option for "quiet".

I installed the sommer the other day. Very happy with it. Very quiet i can not hear the door from inside of my home anymore. Which I'm not sure if I like it being this quite. Used to knowing when someone got home. But now they can walk in and scare me to death. I think I'm gonna hook up a sensor to tell me when the door is opening. It also has a lifetime warranty which is good to know.
