I purchased a jug of evaporust b/c of the large amount of tools i had with surface rust on the to some what help me bring them back to life....Either i got a bad jug or that stuff ***** and cost too much($22)....After reading a few post....I had a list of maybe 4 different things to clean the rust off tools...

1. Evaporust - FAIL
2. Muric Acid - Pass
3. White vinegar - fail
4. chrome acid wheels cleaner - pass

I've learned...if it has any type of acidic horrible smell to it...It will kill the rust...I did a small test with each one in a small container and my test results was in this order

1. Muric acid - Rust evaporated instantly...just beware of the fumes..do this cleaning out side and with rubber gloves and never in the down wind...and its cheap as hell....$5 for a gallon...

2. Acid wheel cleaner - it was as instant as the muric but without the gas fumes. A gallon of that is about $20

3. Evaporust - still waiting on the cleaning ($22)

4 vinegar - dont waste your time.....save it for the bar-b-q ($1.5)

I don't know, I bought a couple of quarts of Evaporust on clearance for $2.50 a quart and it works great. The ambient temp needs to be at least 60 degrees though for it to work and all grease and oil has to be removed from the item prior to soaking. Maybe I got a good batch.:bounce:

Yes muriatic acid will take off the rust.... Now watch as your tools flash rust over the next few days...

evaporust kind of worked for me. it did reveal a few names/letters that were covered completely on some of my grandpas old tools. it did make som eplomb wrenches a little brighter looking. but it was not like magic like i thought it would be.

Unless something is really rusted you only need to let it sit in evaporust fo a couple hours max. Also helps if you wash any grease off first. No more then 24 hours or it turns bare metal really dark. It does help too after you soak the tool to clean it of with a scour pad and some dawn soap. If the tool is chrome and has deep rust and you take the rust off the tool is still going to look like ****. I have had good luck with evaporust but not with chromed tools.

It works gentle wonders if you give it a chance. There is no instant gratification with evaporust. As mentioned above tools don't flash rust. This is important.

Evaporust won't remove chrome like acids will and is not nearly as hazardous as using muriatic acid. I hope you are being careful with the acids, it only takes one screw up and you are in trouble. I've had muriatic acid get in my eyes already and I was wearing safety glasses. Now I wear safety glasses with a full face shield.

I use electrolytic rust removal, it will not remove plating, it's a lot cheaper than evaporust but you have to have patience as it can take awhile.

I cleaned up some garden tools with white vinegar. I bought several gallons and put it and the tools in a plastic garden cart, and left them for a day or so. It was cheap and I was happy.

There is no one answer to cleaning a tool. I have found that different tools take different cleaning methods, sometimes a fine brass wheel is the answer, but usually a combination of methods is best. Even a deburring wheel on some tools (esp. on sockets that have been impacted).

evaporust worked great for me
I used it to clean up/restore some machine tools.
surface rust comes right off and leaves a great finish.
heavier rust takes forever. I learned that for heavier rust you need to knock off some of the heavy rust to speed the process.
as evapo rust works it adsorbs the rust and over time weakens. if you knock the heavy rust off you will extend the life of the stuff.
if something has oil or grease on it it seems to block the action of the evaporust

yes acid works great and quick but it also removes some of the metal. some things that is fine and other things that would be a bad deal

And the fumes from the acid will rust everything they come into contact with. Best to do this outside and far away from any other exposed steel.

Yeah, agree.

I generally have good results with the following:

1. Clean tool in mineral spirits & let dry.
2. Dunk in EOR for a couple hours (as others have said, it's not fast, but it's gentle)
3. Pull it out and brass- or steel- brush by hand (depending on tool's softness)
4. Put back in EOR for another couple of hours
5. Pull out and steel wool with oil.

As a side note.........everyone should shop/search for FLUID FILM aeresol spray.

GREAT Rust Inhibitor for any metal...........

I recently discovered that Fluid Film stuff. NAPA tells me they sell like hotcakes. What I like about it is that it is not petroleum based so therefore probably less toxic. Expensive though at $9 a can.

Yeah, Fluid Film is a good product, and it works great... but it sure does STINK. It smells like that pine oil stuff they used to mop up vomit in elementary school - and I think they left in the vomit when they put it in the can. :puke:

Other than that, though, I like it just fine.

Evaporust works really well when you let it work in an air-tight container. Otherwise the water in it evaporates.

I used it today; had a 1" Snap On FDP wrench that had some rust boil up through the chrome at the box end; set it in some ER for for about an hour and washed it off, looks like new. If you look closely you can only see a few pinholes in the chrome where the rust perforated; the Evaporust worked perfect.

A couple weeks ago I picked up a really rusty 1-1/2" pipe elbow I found on the ground while walking my dog; tossed it in some ER out of curiosity and left it overnight - the next day it looked like it had just come out of the factory.

Pretty useful stuff IMO.
